Geography
A series of elevated volcanic ridges and storm-wracked plateaus at extreme altitude, their crests perpetually shrouded in storm clouds generated by nesting Storm Wyrms. The terrain is razor-edged basalt and frost-cracked obsidian, hostile to all but draconic life.
Climate
Brutal and tempestuous, with near-constant thunderstorms, gale-force winds, and sharp temperature swings between day and night. Lightning strikes are frequent, amplified by the electrical discharge of the Storm Wyrms that inhabit the peaks.

History
The Flame-Crest Highlands were designated an imperial defense zone in the early centuries of the empire, when the High Elder Council recognized that control of altitude meant control of the sky. Storm Wyrms were formally assigned patrol routes here, making the highlands the first line of defense against aerial invasion. The rare Aether Drakes also use the highlands as a launching point for their ascent into the upper aether currents, and it is said that the most gifted Drake-Riders were first bonded to their partners at highland outposts. The highlands form a natural border shared with the territories of other Elder Races, making them a perennial point of diplomatic tension.
Legend & Lore
It is whispered among the highland patrols that during the founding of the imperial defense zone, a Storm Wyrm of impossible size, named in fragmented records only as "the First Gale", flew a single unbroken circuit of the entire Flame-Crest ridgeline and then vanished into the upper aether, never to return. Some draconic scholars believe the First Gale did not die but ascended beyond the mortal sky, and that the perpetual storm clouds crowning the highlands are the lingering breath of its passage. Highland outpost commanders are said to leave a perch of bare obsidian unoccupied at each station, a gesture of invitation, should the First Gale ever choose to descend again. Younger Storm Wyrms who fly the patrol routes at night sometimes report hearing a resonant wingbeat far above the clouds, in a register too deep for any living creature they know.
Life & Culture
Life in the Flame-Crest Highlands is defined by the relentless rhythm of the patrol, Storm Wyrms rotate their circuits on strict imperial schedules, riding thermal columns rising off volcanic vents to conserve their strength against the battering altitude winds. Highland outpost crews, a lean mix of senior Wyrms and bonding-candidate Drake-Riders, spend their off-hours in low stone shelters carved into the basalt ridgelines, where warmth comes only from venting magma channels beneath the rock. Bonding ceremonies between Aether Drakes and their chosen Riders are conducted at dawn at the highest reachable crest, the drake launching into the upper aether currents at first light while the Rider clings to the harness for the first time, a rite equal parts military commission and spiritual ordeal. Diplomatic tensions with neighboring Elder Races mean that boundary-marker patrols along the shared borders are treated as formal military maneuvers, every Wyrm in full imperial livery, every overflight logged and reported to the High Elder Council before nightfall.
