Geography

The Wastes are a fractured surface plateau of exhausted, magically drained rock, likely the result of past tectonic manipulation that stripped the land of its geomantic resonance. The terrain is jagged and uneven, with no significant vegetation, water sources, or mineral veins accessible to geomantic senses.

Climate

Exposed entirely to the surface, the Wastes suffer harsh temperature swings, biting cold at night and arid, wind-scoured conditions by day. No geothermal warmth reaches the surface here, and the occasional storms that batter the Granite Spine push dust and debris across the plateau.

History

The Shattered Wastes were designated as the site of exile, known formally as Stone-Banishment, under both the Talamhari's own Stone Council and the Balance Charter issued by the Celestial Order, the latter specifically targeting violations of large-scale tectonic manipulation. The Wastes are believed by some scholars to be the direct consequence of the very tectonic abuses they now punish, a scarred landscape left by rogue geomancers before the Balance Charter was enacted. Even today, the Frostborn clans of the North-West regard the Wastes as cursed ground, a warning inherited from their Talamhari ancestors.

Legend & Lore

It is whispered among the deep-tunnelers that the Shattered Wastes were not merely wounded by rogue geomancers, but that the land itself screamed when the Balance was broken, a single, catastrophic resonance that shattered every stone-voice within the plateau into silence forevermore. Talamhari elders speak of the Last Unraveling, a nameless geomancer of tremendous power who attempted to reshape an entire mountain range in a single working, and whose body was found at the plateau's center, perfectly preserved but hollow, every grain of mineral having fled his bones. Some condemned exiles have reported hearing a faint, rhythmic grinding beneath the cracked earth at night, not the pulse of living stone, but the death-rattle echo of a geomantic catastrophe still reverberating across centuries. The Frostborn clans refuse to approach within a day's march, believing that the Wastes hunger for the resonance of living stone-bonds, and will slowly drain any Talamhari who lingers too long.

Life & Culture

Stone-Banishment is not a swift execution but a prolonged severance, and the condemned are deposited at the Wastes' edge with only surface-world provisions, no carved stone totems, no resonance anchors, no geomantic tools, ensuring their connection to the Bedrock fades within days of arrival. Without the ability to sense mineral veins or draw upon geomantic power, exiles are reduced to scratching at the exhausted rock with bare hands, a humiliation so profound that many Talamhari consider it a fate worse than death. Those few who survive long enough develop a kind of hollow endurance, fashioning crude shelters from the jagged surface shards and subsisting on whatever surface-world fauna stumbles into the plateau, though little does. Stone Council wardens conduct rare, brief inspections of the Wastes' perimeter, never entering the plateau proper, confirming only that the silence holds and that the exile has not somehow escaped back toward resonant ground.
