Appearance

Physical: The smallest member of her training cohort and the fastest by a margin that surprises everyone who races her once and only them, because after the first time people have been warned. She has a slight, quick frame, brown skin, short-cropped black curls, and wide dark eyes that are almost always in motion — tracking exits, movement, positions.

Clothing: Standard militia recruit kit, worn with idiosyncratic additions: a wristband of braided grass she replaces every week, boots half a size too large that she packs with cloth at the heel, and a battered short knife on her left side that is slightly too large for regulation.

Distinguishing Marks: A faded handprint-shaped burn on her right shoulder blade from a childhood accident with a cooking fire; it is shaped exactly like a hand and she has spent years inventing increasingly elaborate explanations for its origin that she changes each time someone asks.

Relationships

  • Tibalt Wrenshoulde - Her scout captain, who frightens her in the way that competence she wants to match frightens her — she is trying to learn from him without visibly trying to learn from him, which is not going well
  • Corvin Mudstack - A friend from childhood who is now an apprentice farm-warden; their paths cross occasionally, and she finds his open eagerness oddly stabilizing in a context where she is trying to appear more experienced than she is

Personality

  • Operates on a default setting of contained, coiled energy — she is not visibly impatient but gives the impression of someone who could be somewhere else considerably faster if the current conversation would just conclude
  • Entirely fearless about physical risk and commensurately naive about political and social risk; she will walk into a dangerous situation without hesitation and then be completely blindsided by the social consequences of having done so
  • Earnest without being open — she cares deeply about her work and her cohort but shares very little about herself, partly from habit and partly because at nineteen she has not yet fully figured out what there is to share

Backstory

Clover grew up as the oldest of five children in a farm-warden family in Thistledown's western quarter, responsible for younger siblings from age eleven onward, which gave her an early education in keeping track of multiple moving problems simultaneously. She applied for the Militia at the first eligible opportunity, was initially rejected on account of height, appealed with a written argument that included a timed obstacle course she had constructed and run in front of the recruitment panel, and was accepted two weeks later. She is three months into her first season, has already drawn informal notice from Tibalt Wrenshoulde for moving through terrain in a way he calls unnaturally quiet, and has made two enemies in her cohort by inadvertently outperforming them in front of the senior scouts.

Daily Life

Clover's schedule is set by the Militia's training rotation — pre-dawn runs, morning fieldwork training, midday tactics review, afternoon physical drills. She does additional practice after hours, partly from competitiveness and partly because she finds that moving through quiet terrain is the only time she stops managing other people's situations in her head. She writes letters home every week to her siblings, short and practical, and worries about them more than she would admit to anyone in the Militia.

Secret

During a solo navigation drill in the northern perimeter, Clover crossed accidentally into an area outside the official training boundary and found physical evidence of a recent camp — not Halfling, not Orcish in the usual style, and deliberately erased by someone who knew what they were doing but missed one specific detail she recognized from her warden-family background: a soil-pattern that indicates a runic device was recently used there. She reported the navigation deviation and nothing else, filed the other observation in the back of her mind, and has been processing it for three weeks.

Story Hooks

  • 1 Clover approaches outsiders with careful directness: she found something she does not have the rank or experience to investigate officially, and she wants to know what it means before she decides whether to report it and to whom
  • 2 Tibalt assigns outsiders to a northern perimeter patrol with Clover as local guide — what he expects to be a routine orientation turns into something else when Clover leads them directly to the camp site she has been thinking about for three weeks, and the camp has been reoccupied

Narrative Value

Clover is the youngest perspective on Halfling society — a character at the beginning of her adult life whose potential outstrips her experience and whose instincts are strong enough to notice things that more experienced characters have learned to look past. She creates emotional investment through her genuine stakes and provides a grounded, non-political point of entry into the Militia's world.
