Identity
Appearance
Physical: Slightly gangly and still growing into his frame, with an open, wind-reddened face, a persistent smear of soil somewhere on his person at any given moment, and dark brown curls that escape whatever he uses to tie them back. His hands are callous-soft — recently hardened from months of field labor but not yet the worked leather of a veteran warden.
Clothing: A farm-warden apprentice's green tabard over a rough linen shirt, both several washes away from the bright color they were when new, and boots that have been re-soled twice since harvest season.
Distinguishing Marks: A patch of skin on his left forearm with no freckles whatsoever, a pale oval against otherwise sun-dotted skin — a birthmark he calls his clean spot and touches when he is nervous, which is often.
Relationships
- Tibalt Wrenshoulde - The Scout Captain whose daily route brings him through Corvin's field station; Corvin finds him intimidating and fascinating in equal measure and has been unsuccessfully trying to ask him questions about the northern border for two months
- Plum Ferndale - A Story-Weaver who lives near his clan house and who has been teaching him the oral histories of Merryvale's founding farmers; Corvin has begun incorporating historical planting knowledge from these stories into his field notes in a way that his supervisor suspects might actually be onto something
Personality
- Enthusiastic and earnest to a degree that senior farm-wardens find either endearing or exhausting depending on the hour; he asks more questions in a morning than most apprentices ask in a week
- Has not yet learned to mask his emotions — enthusiasm, confusion, and alarm all read immediately on his face, making him a poor liar and an excellent barometer of how a situation is going

Backstory
Corvin grew up in a clan house in Merryvale's southern quarter, the fourth child of a tanner whose business left him with a thorough distaste for enclosed, pungent spaces and a strong preference for working outdoors. He applied for the Farm-Warden apprenticeship three seasons in a row before being accepted on the third attempt, a rejection streak he attributes to his tendency to volunteer information about himself that nobody asked for. He is three months into his first real season, has already made two significant mistakes with runic-plow calibration, has learned from both, and is currently the most eager early-riser in the warden rotation. His supervisor predicts he will either become exceptional or burn out completely within the year.
Daily Life
Corvin arrives at the rune-field stations earlier than required, ostensibly to double-check calibrations but actually because he is afraid of missing something. His mornings are a mix of supervised fieldwork and the extensive note-taking his senior warden has told him twice is excessive but has not told him to stop. Midday market visits give him the chance to talk to merchants about crop output, which is the only time his social confidence visibly increases. He spends evenings rereading the Farm-Warden's Practical Manual, underlining sections and writing questions in the margins that he fully intends to ask but often loses courage for in the morning.
Secret
During his second week as an apprentice, Corvin accidentally triggered a rune-glyph sequence that produced an unplanned secondary growth effect, covering a test patch in a variety of wheat that no Farm-Warden he has consulted can identify. Rather than report it, he has been cultivating the patch in secret, partly out of fear of admitting the mistake and partly because the unidentified wheat has proven indestructible by drought, blight, and pest in three months of observation, and he has a desperate, half-formed hope that this is something important.
Story Hooks
- 1 Corvin approaches outsiders in a panic — someone else has found his secret test patch and he needs help concealing it long enough to determine what the wheat actually is before the Runic Scribes' Guild gets involved and he loses all credit for the discovery
- 2 The unidentified wheat has begun spreading beyond its test boundaries on its own, and Corvin's supervisor has started noticing; he needs someone to help him understand whether this is a miracle or a catastrophe before the growing season ends
Narrative Value
Corvin is a point-of-entry NPC for players new to Halfling society — his questions and curiosity mirror the players' own need to understand the world. His accidental discovery gives him an unexpectedly significant subplot, turning a background character into someone whose choices could have genuine agricultural and political consequences.
