Appearance
Physical: Once powerful, now gaunt from river-settlement living; scales are an unusual mottled rust-red and grey, a natural coloring that read as ill-omened in Pearlspire and which he has come to wear as identity; bioluminescent nodes have a faint greenish tinge from chronic low-level venom exposure
Clothing: Patched and practical — river-trade cloth, not pearl-silk; carries a worn venom-harness across his chest with slots for twelve vials, rarely all filled; no ornamentation except a single carved bone marker at his wrist that he never removes
Distinguishing Marks: A wide brand on his left shoulder — the Council exile mark, three interlocking tide-circles — that he does not cover; his right eye shows a pupil distortion from an old venom accident; his voice carries a permanent slight rasp
Relationships
- Orrhyn Venomcraft - Former mentor who did not testify on his behalf during the exile proceedings; Ossrak does not know whether this was political cowardice or considered judgment, and the uncertainty has occupied him for twenty years
- Lyxeth Poisonmage - Has never met her but has heard through the river network that a Poison-Mage at the Sanctum is pursuing applications that mirror his banned research; he follows her career with complicated interest
- Threxis Pearldiver - Delta-Haven contact who occasionally passes him supplies and news from the cities without asking why; he trusts her practical reliability more than he trusts most people's stated principles

Backstory
Ossrak was once a mid-level Venom-Sage in Pearlspire's Order of Venara, competent and advancing without distinction until he developed a hallucinogenic compound at age forty-eight that he believed had genuine therapeutic applications. The Council of Tides banned it without review, citing risk of misuse. He administered it to a dying elder who requested it, in secret, achieving what he considered a peaceful and meaningful end. A junior colleague reported him. His exile was swift, his title stripped, and his research confiscated. He has spent twenty-four years in river settlements, trading practical Venomcraft services — pain relief, small-scale healing, pest deterrence — to communities the Naga cities largely ignore.
Daily Life
Ossrak moves between four or five river settlements on a loose rotation, spending two to three weeks at each. He maintains a travelling venom kit and a reputation for reliable practical work that precedes him on the river. Mornings he mixes compounds requested by the previous visit's community. Afternoons he walks the settlement and takes informal consultations. He charges in trade goods rather than Tide-Pearls, accumulating what he needs and no more. He spends evenings reading from a collection of Venomcraft texts he copied before his exile.
Secret
The elder Ossrak helped die with his hallucinogenic compound was not the only case — there were four others over the preceding two years, all at the patient's explicit request, all undisclosed. He has never regretted any of them. If this were discovered, it would change the framing of his exile from principled act to pattern of defiance, which would make his rehabilitation — if he ever sought it — impossible.
Story Hooks
- 1 A river settlement is experiencing a plague of a kind Ossrak recognizes as a weaponized Venomcraft compound — someone is testing something, possibly derived from his own confiscated research, and he needs help investigating the source
- 2 Ossrak approaches the players with a proposition: he will guide them through river settlements and provide Venomcraft expertise in exchange for a single favor — access to the Abyssal Sanctum archives where his confiscated research notes are stored
