Appearance

Physical: Compact and eerily still, Thyss has the smallest tail-span of any operative in the Phantom-Scale — eleven feet — which they consider a professional asset. Their scales are the near-black of deep ocean at midnight, with bioluminescent patterns that they have trained to remain suppressed for up to six hours, reducing their visible outline to almost nothing in low light.

Clothing: Nothing reflective, nothing that moves in water without intention — a bodysuit of woven venom-silk that absorbs light and muffles current-disturbance, custom-made by the Abyssal Sanctum's equipment division.

Distinguishing Marks: No visible marks by design; under magnification their scales show micro-etchings of Aqua-Glyphs along the right flank, a personal mapping system they use to navigate in total darkness.

Relationships

  • Handler Ossyris - The Phantom-Scale's senior archivist at Abyssal Sanctum, who gives assignments and receives reports — their relationship is professional with an undertone of genuine regard that neither has named, largely because naming things is something Thyss avoids on principle
  • A Lizardfolk border warden known only as Keth-of-the-Silt - Met during the swamp-border operation; Thyss was operating under a cover identity and Keth apparently found that identity genuinely likeable — they correspond occasionally through a neutral trading intermediary using a language neither of them speaks natively, which provides plausible deniability
  • High Venom-Priest Ssolveth - Thyss has twice attended Venom Communion under assumed names to observe Council-adjacent religious politics; Ssolveth looked directly at them both times and later described the attendant crowd without including Thyss — Thyss considers this the highest professional compliment they have ever received

Backstory

Thyss grew up in a clutch-group in Pearlspire with no particular aptitude for the disciplines that produce Naga prestige — their venomcraft was adequate, their hydro-glyphics mediocre, their Scale-Dancing below average. What they had was a quality no teacher knew how to grade: they were impossible to remember. Clutch-siblings, tutors, and market vendors consistently failed to recall Thyss had been present in a room until presented with evidence. At forty, a Phantom-Scale recruiter who had been watching for exactly this quality made contact and presented a choice that Thyss describes, in the rare moments they describe anything, as 'the first time anyone saw me by looking for absence.' They have operated for thirty-five years, conducting intelligence work across three city-states, two human trading ports, and a Lizardfolk territory during a period of particularly tense swamp-border negotiations. They have never been identified. They have also, quietly, begun to wonder whether a person who has become expert at not existing has actually ceased to.

Daily Life

Thyss keeps no fixed schedule, which is partly operational security and partly a philosophical position. They sleep in the deep-water quarters of the Abyssal Sanctum when between assignments, eat alone in whatever the Sanctum kitchen has prepared, and spend significant time in the Glow-Coral observation chamber watching bioluminescent patterns shift through the water — the only activity that consistently quiets the professional vigilance they cannot otherwise turn off. Active assignments consume weeks to months at a time, during which they maintain whatever cover identity the operation requires.

Secret

Thyss knows the identity of the Council member who ordered the toxin that destroyed Zeth the Unmoored — they discovered it during a routine Pearlspire assignment twelve years ago and never reported it, because reporting it would have required explaining how they discovered it, which would have compromised a source they have protected for two decades. They have spent twelve years deciding whether Zeth's exoneration is worth the cost of that source, and they have not decided.

Story Hooks

  • 1 Players encounter a Halfling merchant in Delta-Haven who offers them a contract for 'discreet recovery of a diplomatic document' — and every operational detail of the job is so precisely tailored to the players' demonstrated capabilities that it is obvious someone has been watching them carefully for some time.
  • 2 Thyss approaches the players directly and without cover, which they have never done with anyone outside the Phantom-Scale — their first words are: 'I have information about someone you have recently met, and I need something from you that I cannot take without permission.'

Narrative Value

Thyss introduces the covert dimension of Naga society — the intelligence apparatus behind the diplomatic grace. They serve as a morally complex ally or adversary who connects multiple plot threads and forces players to decide what truth is worth at what cost.
