Appearance

Physical: The oldest Naga currently known to be living, and it is apparent — his torso carries the compacted density of extreme age, and his tail is twenty-three feet of near-black scales so thick and layered that they provide protection equivalent to Dwarven plate. His eyes are fully bioluminescent — no iris, no pupil, just a constant deep violet glow that burns brighter when he is alert.

Clothing: The original Guardian robes of the Ancient Guardian Order — a garment of compressed Leviathan-hide that he has worn for over a century; it has outlasted four Guardians who trained under him.

Distinguishing Marks: The scales along his full tail length bear the luminescent marks of the Leviathan's acknowledgment — patterns burned into his scales during his first descent to the Trench, which glow in deep water with a light that the Leviathan's bioluminescence recognizes and responds to.

Relationships

  • Coral Architect Vreth Coralshaper - A wordless professional respect — Vreth never builds within thirty meters of the Trench entrance, a constraint he arrived at himself after Vorthek watched him measure the space once without comment; they have not spoken in forty years and are on excellent terms
  • Tide-Warrior Commander Krix Deepwatcher - A more active relationship than most — Krix consults Vorthek before any military operation in the deep-water zones, not because Vorthek has military expertise but because Vorthek knows where the Leviathan is at any given time, and that knowledge is worth the consultation
  • High Venom-Priest Ssolveth - A relationship of mutual unease dressed as formal respect — Ssolveth's religious authority theoretically extends to the Leviathan as a sacred entity; Vorthek has quietly and completely ignored every Council and religious claim to the Trench for two centuries, and his continued success in keeping the Leviathan calm is the only reason this has not become a crisis

Backstory

Vorthek was appointed Guardian during a period when the Leviathan of the Abyssal Trench was behaving unusually — surfacing partially, creating current disturbances that were disrupting Sanctum foundations. His predecessor had died attempting to communicate with it. Vorthek succeeded not by using the techniques in the Guardian texts but by abandoning them entirely and simply descending to the Trench and waiting. The Leviathan investigated him for eleven days. On the twelfth day, it burned the acknowledgment marks into his scales and returned to the Trench. He has never explained what happened in those eleven days, and no one has pressed him, because the Leviathan has been quiet for over two centuries.

Daily Life

Vorthek's schedule is structured around the Leviathan's behavioral cycles rather than Sanctum routine. Dawn descent to the Trench entrance, thirty minutes of stillness at the edge. Return for a breakfast of raw deep-water fish he catches himself during the descent. The rest of the day he is available at his post near the Trench entrance, receiving the rare visitors authorized to consult him. He trains no apprentices — the Guardian Order has been a single-member order for as long as he has held the post — and he has prepared no succession plan.

Secret

In those eleven days in the Trench, the Leviathan did not investigate Vorthek. It spoke to him. Not in Nagari — in a language that predates every civilization Vorthek has ever read about, which he now speaks as well as his native tongue. He knows what the Leviathan guards in the deepest section of the Trench. He also knows that the correct response to that knowledge is to guard the Trench entrance until he dies and ensure no one else goes down to find out.

Story Hooks

  • 1 The Leviathan surfaces for the first time in two centuries, not in distress but in what Vorthek, watching silently, recognizes as summoning behavior — directed at a specific individual in a group of outsiders who have just arrived at the Abyssal Sanctum.
  • 2 Vorthek asks to speak with the players privately and gives them a small, sealed coral cylinder with no explanation except: 'If I do not return from tomorrow's descent, give this to no one who works for the Council.'

Narrative Value

Vorthek is the keeper of Landorya's deepest Naga secret — a figure of mythic age and knowledge who has been waiting patiently for someone worthy to receive what he knows. He is the narrative key to the Leviathan, the Trench, and the pre-civilizational history that the Coral Architect's hidden structure below the Sanctum hints at.
