Appearance
Physical: Ancient and thin, with the slightly translucent quality of very old Naga whose scale pigment has faded to near-iridescence; what remains is a shifting opalescence that is difficult to focus on directly; they move with careful economy, as though conserving something
Clothing: Scholar's robe of deep grey pearl-silk, pockets and sleeves heavily reinforced with additional fabric to hold tools and texts; wears magnifying lenses ground from Hydro-Rune crystal on a chain at the neck; carries a bone stylus worn smooth by centuries of use
Distinguishing Marks: Bioluminescent nodes have aged into a warm amber rather than the cooler tones common in younger Naga; the end of their tail was lost to a deep-sea creature encounter at age one hundred and seventy-three and regrew partially, remaining shorter and differently scaled than the original
Relationships
- Vaessk Hydromancer - Forty-year intellectual correspondence partner whom they have met in person only three times; the distance makes the friendship cleaner, Yrreth believes
- Korrash Abyssalguard - Primary source for security assessments of deep-sea threats they research; they find Korrash's directness refreshing in an environment full of academic hedging
- Orrhyn Venomcraft - Century-long neighbor in the Sanctum whose company they seek specifically when they want no conversation — Orrhyn's silence being more comfortable than most people's speech

Backstory
Yrreth arrived at the Abyssal Sanctum at age thirty-one as a junior researcher in Naga historical linguistics, intending to spend five years cataloguing pre-Tide-War texts. They spent two hundred years instead, finding successively deeper questions beneath each answered one. They developed the standard taxonomy for Hydro-Glyph script variants used across all Naga cities, edited three major historical surveys, and trained forty-seven scholars who went on to positions across the civilization. Their research into pre-Sanctum deep-sea records has brought them closer than any living Naga to understanding what existed in the abyss before Naga civilization extended its reach downward — a question whose answer they are increasingly certain they do not want to share widely.
Daily Life
Yrreth wakes at irregular hours determined by when they fall asleep, which varies by the interest level of their current project. They eat in the archive rather than the dining chamber and have for most of a century. Mornings when they are lucid and energetic are devoted to primary research; afternoons to the junior scholars they supervise with a combination of benign neglect and sudden intense engagement. They correspond extensively with Vaessk Hydromancer via Tide-Pearl messenger tablet. Evening Venom Communion is the social appointment they keep most consistently — it is one of the few activities they do not also attempt to narrate in note form.
Secret
Yrreth has translated a pre-Civilization text from the deep Abyssal archive that describes something vast and patient living in the lowest reaches of the abyss — not a creature in any taxonomy they recognize, but something that the original scribes' word choices suggest was aware of being observed. They have not filed this translation in the archive. They keep the original text in their quarters. They are not certain whether their caution is wisdom or the first symptom of something.
Story Hooks
- 1 Yrreth contacts the players through an intermediary with a specific request: retrieve a sample from a coordinate in the deep abyss for reasons they decline to specify until the players have agreed in principle — a deeply unusual posture for someone who usually shares everything
- 2 A young scholar goes missing after accessing the restricted deep-archive section where Yrreth's most sensitive translations are stored; Yrreth needs the investigation conducted quietly and completely, and is willing to reveal the context to earn that help
Narrative Value
Yrreth is the Abyssal Sanctum's long memory and its deepest unresolved mystery — a two-century scholar who has found something at the bottom of their life's work that they cannot classify. They offer both deep lore access and slow-burning cosmic dread in a warm, humanized package.
