Kalex grew up in a minor outer citadel-state that was attacked by rogue deep-sea leviathans during his twenty-second year; the Abyssal Guard arrived late, and the defensive response cost a third of the citadel's population unnecessarily. He joined the Hydro-Engineers with a specific objective: develop faster-deploying pressure-wave defenses that could be operated without a full Guard contingent.
