Appearance
Physical: Young even by Ocearan reckoning, with the lean build of a deep-water swimmer; her skin is warm ocean-blue fading to pale pearl at her extremities. Her coral tattoos are sparse — only the tide-rune of her First Dive on her left wrist and three survey-rank marks on her right forearm, one still fresh-healed.
Clothing: A close-fitting pressure-suit of treated kelp-membrane reinforced at the joints with coral plating; she carries a cartography satchel of cured ray-skin packed with nacre-tablet survey charts.
Distinguishing Marks: She navigates by echolocation with unusual precision, and when she is concentrating, her webbed fingers spread wide and her jaw drops slightly — a distinctive posture her crewmates have taken to mimicking behind her back, affectionately.
Relationships
- Korvan Tidebreaker - Her current commanding officer; she respects his operational competence and finds his resistance to her structural observations baffling. He has started checking her findings before dismissing them.
- Nyxel Swiftcurrent - The Current-Seeker she was assigned to observe and learn from; Nyxel is simultaneously her professional idol and the person most likely to catch her rule-bending.
- Velaren Pressuremark - She slid a structural anomaly report under his workshop door after Korvan declined to act on it; Velaren responded with three pages of follow-up questions and has not yet decided if she is useful or troublesome.

Backstory
Miranel completed her Rite of the First Dive at thirty-two, returning with a pressure-crystal and an unsanctioned sonar map of a previously uncharted sub-passage she had noticed on descent. The map was confiscated, the passage logged as a minor discovery, and she was assigned to the Survey Fleet one season early as a consequence the assigning officer clearly intended as a reprimand. She has since surveyed forty-seven current junctions, discovered three unmapped thermal vents, and filed nine formal objections to cartography protocols she considers outdated. She is currently on temporary assignment at the Cerulean Gate while her Survey Fleet undergoes refit, and she has already located two structural inconsistencies in the Gate perimeter that Korvan has not yet decided whether to acknowledge.
Daily Life
Miranel wakes before the Night-Watch rotation ends, reviewing current-flow charts by bioluminescent light. She spends her mornings running echolocation sweeps of assigned survey zones and afternoons transcribing data onto nacre tablets for the archive relay. Evenings she attends the communal Tide-Chant because regulations require it, then returns immediately to her maps.
Secret
The sub-passage Miranel mapped during her Rite of the First Dive does not appear on any official cartography — but she has since found a partial nacre-tablet in the Echoing Abyss archive that describes it in language that predates Pelagius. Something was mapped there before the citadel existed, by someone who should not have been there.
Story Hooks
- 1 Miranel's latest survey data contains a current-flow pattern that should be physically impossible given the Gate's structural configuration — she needs someone to help her determine if the anomaly is in her instruments, her math, or the ocean.
- 2 The sub-passage she first mapped has begun emitting a low-frequency resonance that Miranel can detect with her echolocation; she is going to investigate it whether anyone helps her or not.
Narrative Value
Miranel is the discovery catalyst — a young, enthusiastic character whose professional recklessness leads her into secrets the civilization's institutions have chosen not to examine. She is an ideal entry point for investigation plots that require someone with knowledge but insufficient authority to act alone.
