ORINTHOS THE DREAMER

Order of the Starlight

Star-Sage of Psychic Projection, Ministry of Aetheric Sciences

ORINTHOS THE DREAMER serves as Star-Sage of Psychic Projection, Ministry of Aetheric Sciences within Order of the Starlight. ORINTHOS THE DREAMER is identified as Aetherian. Primary residence: The Veil Nexus, the Astral Plateau. Known affiliation: Conclave of Luminaries. Commonly described traits include Traits: Genuinely and non-performatively curious; he can follow the thread of an interesting idea into rude obliviousness without malice, surfacing later apologetic but unchanged; patience for persons is limited, patience for problems is infinite, Mannerisms: Speaks in the middle of thoughts, omitting their opening premise and expecting the listener to reconstruct it; falls into a trancelike stillness lasting several seconds before answering complex questions — students learn to wait rather than repeat themselves, and Voice: Soft and slightly breathy, as though conserving energy; the harmonic overtone that marks Aetherian speech is present but irregular in Orinthos, wavering in and out in a way that correlates, as far as anyone can determine, with how deep in his own thoughts he currently is.

Aetherian Age: 295 Male

Appearance

Physical: Lean and slightly below the Aetherian average in height, with the distracted posture of someone perpetually half-present in the physical world. His luminescent skin pulses in slow, irregular rhythms rather than the steady glow common to most Aetherians — practitioners of Dream-Walking report that this irregularity mirrors the rhythms of his subconscious activity. His eyes are a pale silver, almost white, and carry the slightly unfocused look of a man who has spent decades viewing reality at an angle.

Clothing: Simple undyed Veil-Silk robes secured with a single sigil-clasp at the shoulder — he finds elaborate dress draws attention that interferes with his observations. He carries a Star-Orb the size of a large fruit permanently, turning it slowly in one hand even mid-conversation.

Distinguishing Marks: A cluster of unusually complex sigil-markings at both temples, dense as inscribed text — the result of decades of psychic frontier work that left visible aetheric scarring on the skin above the brain.

Relationships

  • Arch-Luminary Aelindra - Owes his Conclave seat to her sponsorship and repays the debt with the one thing she can trust him to give honestly: the truth about what he finds in places no one else is willing to look
  • Mirael - A young initiate whose First Vision in the Labyrinth of Thought produced a psychic map of her own subconscious that Orinthos immediately requested a copy of — she is unaware he considers her potentially the most significant research subject of his career
  • Velaris the Weaver - She once interrupted one of his experiments to point out that what he was doing constituted a minor violation of the Codex Aetheris; he revised the working and thanked her sincerely, which she found deeply suspicious

Personality

Backstory

Orinthos completed his Trial of the Veil at the age of one hundred and forty-two, not because he lacked ability but because he kept voluntarily extending his time inside the Labyrinth of Thought to study its internal architecture rather than solve his way out of it. The examiners debated whether to disqualify him; instead they elevated him. He spent his first thirty years on the Star-Sage seat producing only fragmentary papers and baffling his colleagues before releasing, at the age of two hundred and ten, the foundational treatise on Dream-Walking that established the discipline as a legitimate division of Psychic Projection. The treatise described internal psychic states so precisely and in such unprecedented structural detail that the Ministry immediately classified sections of it, fearing the implications if the techniques were misapplied. The legend of the Dreamer's Descent originates in a real incident from his two hundred and fifty-third year, when he remained in a Dream-Vigil for eleven days and required three master practitioners to navigate him back to waking consciousness.

Daily Life

Orinthos rarely maintains conventional daily rhythms. He sleeps when the research requires unconsciousness and wakes when something in the psychic landscape shifts. On days when he is present in the physical world, he attends Ministry briefings with notes that are frequently more interesting than the briefings, holds irregular seminars at the Aether-Laboratories for the handful of advanced students with the aptitude for psychic frontier work, and spends hours at the Veil Nexus running experiments whose parameters he revises mid-execution. He eats when reminded to.

Secret

During the eleven-day Dream-Vigil that produced the Dreamer's Descent legend, Orinthos did not lose his way. He found something at the edge of the psychic landscape — a structured intelligence that was not a Thought-Construct and not a dreaming mind — and made contact with it for approximately six hours before the three master practitioners pulled him back. He has never been able to locate it again, and he has never told anyone it existed.

Story Hooks

  • 1 Orinthos summons a group of outsiders to the Veil Nexus at an irregular hour, presses a Star-Orb into their hands that is already warm and faintly humming, and tells them that if they hold it and sleep near the Labyrinth of Thought they will find what he found — and bring it back
  • 2 His newest seminar students have begun reporting shared dream imagery that matches descriptions from the classified sections of the Dream-Walking treatise — imagery they should have no access to

Narrative Value

Orinthos is the Order's explorer of the uncanny interior — the figure who has gone furthest into psychic territory and returned with questions rather than answers. He provides access to Dream-Walking mechanics, psychic investigation, and the suggestion of a non-Order intelligence operating at the edges of aetheric consciousness.
