ARINTH THE RETURNED

Order of the Starlight

Former Star-Emissary — Status: Returned after 38-year absence

ARINTH THE RETURNED serves as Former Star-Emissary — Status: Returned after 38-year absence within Order of the Starlight. ARINTH THE RETURNED is identified as Aetherian. Primary residence: Guest quarters, Luminara, the Astral Plateau. Commonly described traits include Traits: Present and attentive and simultaneously managing something large that he does not perform as distress — the quality of someone who has been away long enough that returning is not simple, dealing with it with the precision of a practitioner and the patience of someone who has learned that precision alone is insufficient, Mannerisms: He pauses before answering questions about the thirty-eight years in a way that is not evasion — he is composing an answer, specifically, that is accurate without being more than the questioner is prepared to process; people who push past the pause get answers they are not always glad to have, and Voice: Quiet and careful, with a harmonic resonance that has an unfamiliar undertone that Thaelan identified, on first hearing it, as matching a musical interval structure from outside any tradition in the Order's archive.

Aetherian Age: 199 Male

"The Gate took thirty-eight years of your time. It took the amount of time I needed. I do not know yet whether those are the same thing."

Appearance

Physical: Arinth has been back in Luminara for four months and looks like someone whose body returned before everything else did. He is thinner than a hundred and sixty years of typical Aetherian development would produce, with a gauntness that Imara's healers have assessed as chronic rather than acute — the result of decades operating outside the Order's nutritional and aetheric support structures. His skin luminescence is a pale, flickering gold that stabilizes briefly when he is at rest and fluctuates in patterns that don't quite match the standard Aetherian repertoire — small, involuntary adaptations from years in environments with different aetheric backgrounds.

Clothing: New clothing provided by the Order upon his return, worn with the slight unfamiliarity of someone who had been dressing for different conditions; he has kept one item from his years away, a wristband of non-Aetherian origin in a material no one in Luminara has been able to identify, which he declines to remove for examination.

Distinguishing Marks: His sigil-markings developed during his absence in unusual ways — the base markings follow normal progression, but overlaid on them are a second set in a style no one in Luminara recognizes, which grew, apparently, without his awareness or intention during his time away.

Relationships

  • Zareya the Star-Emissary - She was a junior Emissary when he left and is the senior diplomatic practitioner now; she has visited him three times in Guest Quarters, ostensibly for Ministry debrief purposes, and has spent each visit primarily listening to him in a way that suggests the listening is the point
  • Imara the Woven-Whole - His primary healer and the practitioner he has told most about his absence — not the where, which he has not told anyone, but the physical experience of living in a different aetheric environment for decades; she is the only person in Luminara he has trusted with the fact that the unidentified wristband has an aetheric signature that, if removed, she has assessed would produce a response he is not prepared to describe
  • Nyras the Gate-Builder - She reviewed Gate Seven's transit logs immediately on his return and found nothing unusual in the mechanics — the Gate functioned exactly as designed, in both the outbound and return transits; she has been visiting him once a week, asking quiet technical questions about the subjective experience of a transit that lasted hours by his perception and thirty-eight years by the Gate's log

Backstory

Arinth departed the Astral Plateau thirty-eight years ago on a diplomatic mission to the Zephyrian sky-port of Aethelor, through Gate Seven of the registered network. He never arrived. Gate Seven showed no transit anomaly. The investigation file remained open for eleven years before the Ministry reclassified him as lost and closed it. He reappeared four months ago through Gate Seven, walking, carrying nothing except the unidentified wristband, with no apparent knowledge that thirty-eight years had passed by Luminara's measure. By his account, the transit had been brief — he had stepped through and stepped back, a matter of hours. He has been in Luminara's Guest Quarters since, cooperating fully with all debriefs except one: he has not yet described where he was.

Daily Life

Arinth's days are structured by his reinstatement process rather than any role of his own choosing: morning medical assessments with Imara's healers, administrative debriefs with the Ministry of the Veil in the afternoon, and the consultation sessions with Caelis of the Astral Tribunal that his legal status requires. He spends the hours between these obligations in the Guest Quarters' small garden, where three Star-Academy initiates have begun visiting without official sanction to ask him questions about the outside world — questions he answers with a care and specificity that has alarmed the Ministry's debrief team and reassured the initiates.

Secret

He knows where he was. He spent thirty-eight years in a space he has no Aethertongue word for — not another plane, not the psychic frontier, not a rift-space — a place with its own geography, its own aetheric ecology, and inhabitants who taught him enough of their language to communicate. He has not disclosed this in the debriefs because the space he was in exists inside the ley-line convergence beneath the Astral Plateau, and its inhabitants have been there longer than the Order has been on the Plateau, and they sent him back with a specific message for the Order that he is still deciding how to deliver.

Story Hooks

  • 1 Arinth approaches outsiders — specifically, people who are not bound by Ministry debrief confidentiality — and asks them to meet him in the garden at midnight; he needs witnesses outside the institutional record when he discloses the message he was sent back to deliver
  • 2 The unidentified wristband begins producing aetheric output on a schedule Arinth recognizes as a countdown; he has approximately three weeks before the space he came from makes contact directly, bypassing him — and he needs help deciding what to tell the Order before that happens

Narrative Value

Arinth is the Order's most significant returning mystery and the character whose disclosure — when it comes — will reframe the Order's understanding of the ley-line convergence beneath the Plateau, connecting Corath's Wyrm warning, Nyras's fifth unregistered Gate, and the pre-Aethertongue records Nythara has been investigating into a single converging narrative thread; he is the figure around whom the Order's largest unresolved questions become simultaneous.
