Nyras designed her first Aether-Gate at age forty-three using a theoretical framework her seniors told her was two decades from practical application. It worked. She was assigned to the Gate Network's construction division, redesigned the standard Gate architecture within a decade, and has since built or rebuilt forty-one of the Network's forty-seven active Gates, eliminating the cascade-failure risk that had produced three catastrophic transit events in the previous century. She has also, in the same period, built eleven Gates that are not on the Ministry's official register — testing installations at locations she selected based on a theory about the relationship between ley-line topology and Gate efficiency that the Ministry's risk committee declined to fund. The testing installations are all functional. None of them are documented.
Daily Life
Nyras maintains the Gate Network's operational schedule: each morning reviewing the overnight transit logs for anomalies in all forty-seven registered Gates and, on a separate unlinked instrument, checking the eleven unregistered ones. Active construction phases involve direct on-site work at locations across the Plateau and, for the larger registered Gate projects, coordination with the Talamhari and Zephyrian practitioners who collaborate on cross-civilization connection points. Between construction phases she develops new Gate architectures, works on the ley-line topology theory that drives her site selection, and periodically consults Berath of the Confluence on the relationship between ley-line convergence and transit-matrix stability.

One of the eleven unregistered Gates — the fifth one she built, at a ley-line topology point she identified as theoretically optimal — does not transit to the destination matrix she programmed. It transits somewhere she cannot identify from the transit log: a physical location that does not correspond to any known site on the Astral Plateau or its approaches. She has not entered the Gate to investigate and has not dismantled it.
