ARDITH THE SEVERED
Order of the StarlightFormer Probability-Shaper, Aether-Aid Recovery Program
ARDITH THE SEVERED serves as Former Probability-Shaper, Aether-Aid Recovery Program within Order of the Starlight. ARDITH THE SEVERED is identified as Aetherian. Primary residence: Luminara, the Astral Plateau. Commonly described traits include Traits: Precise and self-contained, with the characteristic quality of someone who has reorganized their entire sense of self around a loss and has managed, mostly, to complete the reorganization; his intelligence is fully intact and has found new channels that are not aetheric, which surprises colleagues who assumed the severance would leave him diminished, Mannerisms: Asks questions with unusual precision — he has found that the skill he used to apply to probability calculations now applies to information gathering through ordinary conversation, and he is very good at it, and Voice: Quiet and flat, without the Aetherian harmonic resonance that the Veil-Severance eliminated along with the aetheric connection; he was forty-two years old before he heard himself speak without the overtone, and he has never become entirely accustomed to it.
"I am told the severance was the price of what I did. I have spent sixty-six years calculating whether the price was correct. I am still working on the answer."

Appearance
Physical: The first thing practitioners notice about Ardith is absence — his skin does not glow. The complete lack of luminescence in an Aetherian face produces a quality of visual flatness that those unaccustomed to it find unsettling, the way a room without shadows is unsettling. He is lean and slightly hollow-cheeked, with eyes that are a plain, non-luminescent grey. The sigil-markings that appeared on his skin during adolescence remain, but they are dark and inert where they were once active.
Clothing: Plain, dark civilian dress without sigil-notation of any kind — he finds the presence of aetheric encoding in clothing aggravating in the way that a formerly conversational person might find loud environments aggravating.
Distinguishing Marks: The Veil-Severance that ended his practice left a specific mark: a hairline vertical scar on his inner left wrist, so faint as to be nearly invisible, that is the physical trace of the ritual that severed his aetheric connection. He wears a wrist-covering at all times.
Relationships
- Thessia the Probability Walker - She sought him out specifically, eight years ago, and has been meeting with him quarterly since; he does not tell her what to do and she does not tell him what she is working on, but the meetings produce something neither of them has been able to name that both of them schedule around
- Velan the Codex Voice - Velan adjudicated his Severance proceeding and was the one member of the Astral Tribunal who asked whether the two unauthorized workings had, in fact, caused any damage; Ardith considers this the most important question anyone asked during the proceeding and has been thinking about Velan's role in the law ever since
- Arch-Luminary Aelindra - She reviewed the proceeding and approved the Severance; he holds no apparent resentment toward her and attends, once a year, the annual Dawn-Attunement ceremony that is open to all residents of Luminara including those without aetheric connection — he stands at the back and she has noticed him there every year for sixty-six years without acknowledging or avoiding him

Backstory
Ardith was a promising Probability-Shaper in his early career who exceeded the Balance Charter's limits in a manner the Conclave determined was non-accidental — he had identified a specific working that he calculated would produce no reality fracture despite exceeding the permitted range and had executed it twice before discovery. He was correct that no reality fracture resulted. He was subjected to Veil-Severance at the age of one hundred and thirty-eight and has lived without aetheric connection for sixty-six years. He has never contested the ruling and has never expressed public resentment toward the Conclave, which the Order finds more unsettling than resentment would be. He works in the Aether-Aid program that provides support for psychic injury and aetheric burnout, serving practitioners who have lost abilities involuntarily — a role he requested, to general surprise, six months after his Severance.
Daily Life
Ardith conducts support sessions for Aether-Aid clients through the morning, eats lunch with whoever is present, and spends his afternoons at a small workbench in the Aether-Aid clinic writing a theoretical framework for what he calls 'post-aetheric cognition' — how Aetherian minds restructure themselves following severance or burnout. He has been writing this framework for thirty years and considers it not finished but useful in its current state. He answers questions about his own experience of Severance with complete honesty, which practitioners who visit the Aether-Aid program as observers find either illuminating or disturbing, depending on how comfortable they are with the idea of a practitioner at peace with the thing they most fear.
Secret
The working that led to Ardith's Severance was not an act of ambition or recklessness. It was an attempt to prevent an outcome his probability models had projected with ninety-three percent confidence: a specific cascade that would have resulted in the deaths of eleven people in the Aether-Laboratories within the following month. He executed the working. The cascade did not occur. He has never told anyone the cascade was the reason because the Conclave would have had to choose between believing his probability model — which was his own proprietary method, unverified by external review — and the interpretation that he simply exceeded the Charter for personal research reasons. He judged, correctly, that they would not believe the model. He accepts this as a rational institutional outcome and continues to find it painful.
Story Hooks
- 1 Ardith contacts outsiders with a request routed through informal channels: his probability models, which he still runs without aetheric amplification using purely mathematical notation, are projecting a new cascade — and this time, he needs someone to verify it independently before he decides what to do
- 2 An Aether-Aid client describes symptoms that match the initial stages of aetheric burnout but that Ardith recognizes as matching a different pattern: the early indicators of involuntary aetheric amplification, which would mean the client is not losing their connection but having it forcibly opened
Narrative Value
Ardith is the Order's living consequence — the practitioner who paid the maximum non-lethal price for exceeding the Balance Charter and has built a second life from the rubble of that decision, carrying a secret that reframes whether the Charter's enforcement was just. He provides access to the emotional and social reality of Veil-Severance, the ethics of pre-emptive probability working, and a man running probability models without magic who may see the next disaster coming.
