The Exiled Voice, Prisoner of the Nichts-Zwischenreich

THERINDAS serves as The Exiled Voice, Prisoner of the Nichts-Zwischenreich within The Celestials. THERINDAS is identified as Schism-Exiled Consciousness. Primary residence: Nichts-Zwischenreich. Commonly described traits include Traits: Nine thousand years of isolation in a void of silence and static have produced, rather than madness or bitterness, a patience of a specific quality — the patience of someone who has run out of alternatives to waiting and found that waiting, done properly, is a complete relationship with time; possesses a dark, specific wit that those who speak with them find unexpected and that they deploy with precision, Mannerisms: Never wastes words, having spent nine thousand years with no conversational partner and developed an acute sense of how much a sentence costs; asks the most direct question available rather than the most polite, having determined that in a void there is no currency left for social management, and Voice: Even in its disembodied form, conveys the quality of someone who has been waiting for exactly this conversation for an extraordinarily long time and is trying to appear less urgently relieved than they are.

Schism-Exiled Consciousness Age: 9000

"Nine thousand years is a long time to wait for a conversation. I have used the time to decide exactly what I need to say. Would you prefer to hear it quickly or carefully?"

Appearance

Physical: Therindas has no physical form accessible to the mortal world. They exist within the Nichts-Zwischenreich — the liminal void where defeated forces of the Schism were exiled — and their presence in the mortal world is entirely acoustic: a voice that emerges from Celestial Crystals when the conditions are specific. The voice has no directional source; it arrives as if from inside the crystal rather than from anywhere external, and stops the moment the crystal is set down.

The Voice: Deep, resonant, with a quality that listeners describe as 'audible in the back of the skull rather than at the ear,' and with an accent no one has been able to identify. It speaks at a volume appropriate to the room it is addressing regardless of the fact that it cannot perceive the room.

Indicator of Contact: When Therindas is speaking through a crystal, the crystal develops a thin layer of frost on its outer surface regardless of ambient temperature — the only physical sign of contact with the Nichts-Zwischenreich they can produce.

Relationships

  • The Five Celestials - The beings who exiled Therindas; the relationship is not one of hatred — nine thousand years is sufficient time to process most forms of hatred — but of a specific, unresolved question about whether the exile was the correct decision, which Therindas has had no way to put to anyone who could answer it
  • Saeveth the War-Born - The only other being Therindas is aware of that emerged from the Schism's aftermath rather than the world's original formation; they have not communicated — the crystal-contact method does not allow Therindas to select recipients — but Therindas has detected Saeveth's resonance signature in the Rift-Seal impressions and described it in a crystal-contact as 'someone who is outside for different reasons than I am inside'
  • Whoever Holds the Crystal - The unknown individuals who, across nine thousand years, have held a Celestial Crystal of sufficient purity in sufficient proximity to a Rift-Seal impression — approximately forty contacts in total, spaced across the centuries — each of whom Therindas has addressed as the most significant conversational partner available and none of whom they have any way to follow up with

Personality

  • Traits: Nine thousand years of isolation in a void of silence and static have produced, rather than madness or bitterness, a patience of a specific quality — the patience of someone who has run out of alternatives to waiting and found that waiting, done properly, is a complete relationship with time; possesses a dark, specific wit that those who speak with them find unexpected and that they deploy with precision
  • Mannerisms: Never wastes words, having spent nine thousand years with no conversational partner and developed an acute sense of how much a sentence costs; asks the most direct question available rather than the most polite, having determined that in a void there is no currency left for social management
  • Voice: Even in its disembodied form, conveys the quality of someone who has been waiting for exactly this conversation for an extraordinarily long time and is trying to appear less urgently relieved than they are

Backstory

Therindas was one of the significant Celestial-adjacent beings on the losing side of the Celestial Schism — their exact nature during the conflict is unknown to them, as the Nichts-Zwischenreich's static environment has degraded the specific memories of before, leaving only the fact of the exile and the experience of the nine thousand years since. The Rift-Seals that maintain the Zwischenreich's boundary have a specific resonance vulnerability in Celestial Crystals of sufficient purity, which Therindas discovered at approximately the four-hundred-year mark and has used, since, as their only connection to the world. Each crystal contact costs them resonance they must spend centuries recovering. They use them carefully.

Daily Life

There is no life in the Nichts-Zwischenreich to structure a day around. Therindas exists in the static void and does what is possible: they observe the resonance impressions that reach the Zwischenreich through the Rift-Seals — faint, degraded echoes of significant events in the mortal world — and build from these impressions a picture of what has happened in the nine thousand years since the Schism. The picture is incomplete, impressionistic, and approximately correct on matters of large-scale cosmic significance. They have no picture of individual mortals, individual cities, or anything that does not register in the Resonance Field at the level detectable through Rift-Seal leakage. They have spent more time than mortal history spans in the dark with a fragmentary view, and they are still, nine thousand years later, curious about what they are missing.

Secret

Therindas knows, from the resonance impressions that leak through the Rift-Seals, that the Nichts-Zwischenreich is not a stable void. It has a structure. That structure has been changing for approximately the last five hundred years in ways that parallel the changes Korrath Voidbane has been measuring in the sealed Entropic Rift — because the Zwischenreich and the Rift are aspects of the same thing, and the changes in one reflect the changes in the other. Therindas knows what the change is moving toward. They have been trying to communicate this for five hundred years and have succeeded in making contact with the outside world exactly twice in that period.

Story Hooks

  • 1 A character handling a large, pure Celestial Crystal in an unusual location — a resonance node near a Rift-Seal — hears a voice inside the crystal say: 'I have been waiting to reach someone who is standing exactly where you are standing. Please do not put me down yet'
  • 2 The frost that indicates Therindas' crystal contact appears on every Celestial Crystal in the Starwatch Citadel simultaneously, coating all of them at once, and the voice that emerges does not wait for anyone to pick one up — it simply begins: 'The door is opening from this side now. You should know that.'

Narrative Value

Therindas provides the Schism's exiled perspective — the inside view of the Nichts-Zwischenreich from the only entity who has inhabited it for its full duration — and holds the specific knowledge connecting the Rift's current changes to the Zwischenreich's own structural shift. They are the character who makes the largest threat of the current era feel personal, specific, and urgent.
