Appearance

Physical: Built with the compact power that marks strong storm-flight candidates, her frame somewhat heavier than typical Aeriel build — something her selection instructors noted as an advantage in high-wind resistance. Her feathers are an unusual warm amber, described in Wing Guard assessment notes as atypical pigmentation with no documented precedent in the Aeriel population. The warmth of her coloring deepens near her shoulder joints in a pattern that thermal-imaging assessment flagged and that no one has formally explained.

Clothing: Storm-Rider candidate training harness, worn correctly and maintained obsessively. She polishes the fittings in the evenings, which other candidates find excessive and she finds non-negotiable.

Distinguishing Marks: Her lower wing-joints carry small heat-marks in a radial pattern that she has explained as a training injury. This is partially true.

Relationships

  • Kaelvar Stormspike - The Captain has observed her three training sorties and offered a technical note after each. She takes the notes seriously and reads the subtext beneath them, which is that he is paying closer attention than a routine selection review would require. She is not certain whether this is good or bad.
  • Corven Skyward - She does not know the Ambassador exists, but the locked correspondence in her mother's box references him as someone her mother once asked to locate Davan through diplomatic contacts. Whether Corven knows about Orissia is a question she has not yet decided to pursue.
  • Lynaera Driftborn - The two met during a joint training exercise and found a quick practical rapport. Lynaera has never asked about Orissia's background, which Orissia finds restful in a way she cannot explain to anyone.

Personality

  • Traits: Driven by a need to prove specific things to specific people, which has given her work ethic exceptional fuel and her judgment occasional blind spots; honest about her abilities and her shortcomings in ways that disarm colleagues who expect candidates to perform confidence; capable of extraordinary calm in high-intensity flight situations that her instructors attribute to exceptional training and she knows has a different source
  • Mannerisms: Runs her thumb along the inside edge of her wing-joint before difficult flights, a gesture she does not know she makes; speaks very precisely about thermal dynamics and becomes imprecise when discussing personal history; always arrives early and always occupies a position near an exit
  • Voice: Clear and controlled, with the very slight mid-sentence pause of someone who learned to translate between conversational registers as a child.

Backstory

Orissia was raised in the Skyreach lower-city district by her mother, who she was told was a Cloud-Mason from the northern settlements. She was not told about her father until she was twenty-three, when her mother died and left a locked box containing correspondence that identified him as a Pyrakian fire-worker named Davan, who her mother had met through trade contact fifteen years before Orissia was born. The amber feathers and the thermal marks are his inheritance — an aeromantic-pyromantic hybrid expression that should be theoretically impossible and that presents no practical problem unless subjected to deep Wing Guard medical screening, which Storm-Rider candidates undergo in their second year. She is currently two months from that screening.

Daily Life

Orissia runs the training course before her scheduled slot, every day, to know the route well enough to perform it in adverse conditions without relying on memory. She studies thermal dynamics in the evenings with a focus her instructors praise and a specific application they are not aware of — she is modeling her own thermal signature and calculating whether it will remain within Aeriel-standard parameters during the screening.

Secret

Orissia's hybrid heritage means she can generate a contained thermal field from her wing-joints — enough to survive conditions that would incapacitate standard Aeriel Storm-Riders. She discovered this accidentally during a training run through an unusually cold high-altitude front and has used it twice since under conditions where she was certain she was unobserved. It would make her an exceptional Storm-Rider. It would also, if discovered and reported, likely end her candidacy, her Wing Guard career, and possibly her position as a Confederacy citizen, depending on how the Tempest Tribunal chose to interpret cross-heritage aeromantic expression under the Balance Charter.

Story Hooks

  • 1 Orissia privately asks outsiders whether they know anyone with access to Pyrakian immigration records from forty years ago — specifically, whether a fire-worker named Davan is documented as having trade contact with the Azure Rift settlements. She frames this as genealogical curiosity and does not mention the approaching screening.
  • 2 During a high-altitude training emergency in which a standard Aeriel candidate would certainly die from exposure, Orissia uses her thermal ability visibly to survive and complete the rescue. She is now facing a Wing Guard medical inquiry that requires a credible explanation before the screening results come back.

Narrative Value

Orissia carries a cross-civilization identity that challenges Zephyrian assumptions about racial purity and legal belonging. She provides a personal stake in the Zephyrian-Pyrakian political relationship, a time-pressured secret that players can help manage or expose, and a character whose hybrid nature could become a symbolic bridge between rival civilizations — or a flashpoint.
