Storm-Crystal Blade

Also known as: Korr's Blade, the Lightning Edge, the First-Forged

The Storm-Crystal Blade is the masterwork of Storm-Smith Korr, the first weapon forged in the Cloud-Forge to bind a Storm-Crystal at its core without shattering the blade matrix under the induction stress. The edge is as much a lightning channel as a physical cutting surface: when drawn, it crackles with visible electrical discharge, trails vapour from the moisture it ionises in the surrounding air, and carries the unmistakable sharp scent of a fresh storm front. The blade is single-edged, slightly curved for aerial slashing arcs, and the crystal core is visible through the translucent upper third of the metal as a slowly pulsing blue-white filament.

Overview

Storm-Crystal Blade is a legendary weapon in Landorya. Its known origin is Forged by Storm-Smith Korr in the Zephyrian Cloud-Forge during the high period of the Aerial Confederacy. Korr spent eleven years developing an alloy of sky-iron and compressed wind-copper capable of withstanding continuous crystal induction before the first successful blade emerged from the Cloud-Forge without fracturing. The induction technique he devised, threading aeromantic binding-runes through the alloy at the molecular level during tempering, was later adapted by Aeriel weaponsmiths and became the foundation of the Storm-Smith discipline.. Its most cited abilities include Channels stored Storm-Crystal energy through the blade edge, delivering a concentrated electrical discharge on each strike, Stuns targets with involuntary muscle paralysis on contact with flesh, effect proportional to the crystal's charge level, and Generates a localized electromagnetic field that deflects incoming crossbow bolts and light metal projectiles. Accounts also warn of a drawback: Sustained use by a non-aeromancer causes progressive muscle spasms in the sword arm that worsen with each engagement. After three battles without aeromantic gr…

History

After Korr's death the original Storm-Crystal Blade passed through several hands in the Wing Guard officer corps, each transfer marked by a formal ceremony at the Cloud-Spire where the outgoing bearer discharged the blade into the open sky as a salute. The blade's current location is disputed: one Aeriel chronicle places it in the Sky-Archives as a relic of the founding era, while a rival account claims a Storm-Rider carried it into the battle at the Tempest Rift against Pyrakian forces and it was lost when the rider fell. Aeriel weaponsmiths have produced numerous successors using Korr's adapted technique, and the term Storm-Crystal Blade now refers broadly to any weapon of the type, though the original remains sought after as a symbol of the Confederacy's magitech heritage.

Powers & Abilities

  • Channels stored Storm-Crystal energy through the blade edge, delivering a concentrated electrical discharge on each strike
  • Stuns targets with involuntary muscle paralysis on contact with flesh, effect proportional to the crystal's charge level
  • Generates a localized electromagnetic field that deflects incoming crossbow bolts and light metal projectiles
  • Allows the wielder to sense atmospheric conditions within a league radius through the blade's barometric resonance
  • Can release its full charge in a single ranged lightning burst at the cost of depleting the crystal for one full day

Curse or Drawback

Sustained use by a non-aeromancer causes progressive muscle spasms in the sword arm that worsen with each engagement. After three battles without aeromantic grounding, the spasms become permanent unless treated by a Cloud-Mason specialising in electrical injury. Aeromancers of insufficient training experience uncontrolled discharge during emotional distress, making the blade dangerous to allies in close formation.
