DORN BOLTFORGE
ZephyriansMaster Storm-Smith, Keeper of the Cloud-Forge, Heir to Korr's Methods
DORN BOLTFORGE serves as Master Storm-Smith, Keeper of the Cloud-Forge, Heir to Korr's Methods within Zephyrians. DORN BOLTFORGE is identified as Aeriel. Primary residence: Cloud-Forge compound, Tempest Rift clifftop. Known affiliation: Storm-Smith Guild — independent. Commonly described traits include Traits: Slow to form opinions and immovable once formed; judges people entirely by what they make rather than who they are; holds the craft of Storm-Smithing to a near-spiritual standard that makes him difficult to commission and impossible to rush, Mannerisms: Tests the structural integrity of every object he touches, including furniture, by pressing it in ways its owner finds alarming; speaks about metals and crystals with the same vocabulary others use for living beings; goes silent for minutes at a time mid-conversation when something he has said triggers a technical realization, and Voice: Deep and measured, with the slight resonance of someone who has spent a century shouting instructions over forge noise. He has learned to use this volume as an intensity control — the quieter he gets, the more serious the matter..
"The storm does not know it is being tempered. That is why it is possible at all."

Appearance
Physical: Dorn is the broadest-shouldered Aeriel most people have ever seen, developed over a century of forge work that demands physical strength unusual in a hollow-boned species. His skin's sky-blue has been fired to something closer to steel-grey at his forearms and upper chest, the result of decades of proximity to Storm-Crystal heat. His wings are kept tightly folded during forge work and are scorched at the trailing edges in a pattern his colleagues call the Smith's Signature.
Clothing: A heavy apron of wind-resistant hide over minimal Aero-Silk — the Cloud-Forge runs at temperatures where elegance is a liability. His gloves are off when working; he says he can only feel the metal's resonance with bare hands.
Distinguishing Marks: Burns on all ten fingers, each healed differently, that he reads like a map of his career. He can point to the burn from his first successful Storm-Crystal temper and the one from the moment he understood what Korr's methods actually require.
Relationships
- Orveth Galecleft - His junior by forty years and, in Dorn's private assessment, the only other Storm-Smith working today who asks the right questions about the craft. He has been mentoring Orveth informally for a decade without using the word mentoring.
- Kaelvar Stormspike - A customer who became something approaching a friend because Kaelvar is one of the few clients who handles a finished weapon the way a smith wants to see it used. Dorn made him a personal gift once — a small weather-reading instrument — and has never mentioned it.

Backstory
Dorn apprenticed under the last Storm-Smith who had trained under someone who had trained under Korr himself, a lineage he traces with the precision of the Gale-Chronicles. He has spent sixty years reconstructing Korr's original techniques from the few surviving design documents in the Sky-Archives and from physical analysis of the three known original Storm-Crystal Blades. His reconstructions are, by unanimous expert assessment, indistinguishable from the originals — a fact that both validates his life's work and troubles him, because Korr's original methods involved channeling storm-energy at volumes the Balance Charter now prohibits. He has found a way to achieve equivalent results within the Charter's limits. He has told no one this is possible because he does not want to know who else would use the knowledge.
Daily Life
Dorn runs the Cloud-Forge on a schedule dictated by the Tempest Rift's storm-cycle rather than any social calendar. He works when the energy is right and sleeps when it is not. He takes on one commission per season at most and has a waiting list that currently extends four years. He contributes design specifications to the Wing Guard's Aero-Lance maintenance program and has declined every offer of a formal Ministry position.
Secret
Dorn completed the Storm-Crystal Blade commissioned by Archon Sylindra but has not delivered it. He was in the process of packaging it for transport when his analysis of the crystal's resonance pattern revealed it was keyed to something specific — not just any storm-energy, but the particular energy signature of the Tempest Rift's deepest channel. The blade would not just channel lightning. In the right conditions, near the right location, it would open something. He is waiting to understand what before he hands it to anyone.
Story Hooks
- 1 Dorn contacts outsiders not through official channels but by leaving a single Storm-Crystal fragment at their lodgings — his traditional signal for a private commission. When they arrive at the Cloud-Forge he wants them to take something into the Rift and return with a core-sample reading, because his instruments suggest the forge's energy source is shifting and he needs to know why before the next firing.
- 2 A Storm-Smith apprentice from a rival city-state arrives in Skyreach claiming Dorn stole their master's technique documents. The accusation is false, but investigating it requires Dorn to reveal the extent of his Korr research — and potentially who else has been quietly studying the same materials.
Narrative Value
Dorn anchors the craft and military-technology thread of Zephyrian civilization, providing access to the most powerful weapons in the setting and serving as an independent moral force outside both the Wind-Council and the military hierarchy. His undelivered blade is a physical object with plot consequences that can activate at any story-appropriate moment.
