Overview

Stone-Sentinel belongs to magical construct in the Landorya bestiary. Its usual habitat is Stone-Sentinels are stationed throughout the oasis-khanates of the Whispering Sands, most commonly at the thresholds of great observatories, underground archive chambers, and wind-carved city gates where the desert meets cultivated stone.. Stone-Sentinels are the primary defensive construct of the Desert Scholars, built and maintained by the Ministry of Sand-Weave to guard archive vaults, escort Ambassadorial Carava… Key abilities include Sand-body reformation, can absorb and expel loose sand to repair damage or reshape limbs, Seismic sense, detects footsteps and buried movement through vibrations in the ground, and Solar charging, passively absorbs sunlight to sustain its arcane core indefinitely in the desert.

Appearance

A compact humanoid figure sculpted entirely from compressed desert sand and sun-fused stone, its surface glittering faintly with embedded Solar-Sand Crystals that pulse with amber light. Its joints are smooth wind-carved arches of hardened glass, and runes of Sand-Weave script spiral across its chest and forearms like living constellation tattoos.

Temperament

Stone-Sentinels are patient and utterly impassive, standing motionless for days at a time until their ward is threatened. When roused, they act with cold mechanical efficiency, neither cruel nor merciful, only purposeful.

Abilities

  • Sand-body reformation, can absorb and expel loose sand to repair damage or reshape limbs
  • Seismic sense, detects footsteps and buried movement through vibrations in the ground
  • Solar charging, passively absorbs sunlight to sustain its arcane core indefinitely in the desert
  • Sandblast strike, releases a compressed burst of razor-edged sand from its fists
  • Archive ward, can be attuned to a Memory Crystal to sound a silent arcane alarm when the archive is breached

Lore

The oldest Stone-Sentinels are said to have been shaped during the founding of Sahar-Al-Mutaqaddim itself, their cores containing fragments of the first Memory Crystals ever inscribed. Scholars of the Celestial Order have reportedly offered vast sums to study a decommissioned Sentinel, believing the Solar-Sand Crystals within their chests to be related to star-crystal formations found in the far north. A dark rumor persists among Ethics scholars that a Sentinel left unwatched for a full century may develop a rudimentary will, and that at least one has refused a direct command from a Grand Scribe.

Role in the World

Stone-Sentinels are the primary defensive construct of the Desert Scholars, built and maintained by the Ministry of Sand-Weave to guard archive vaults, escort Ambassadorial Caravans, and protect the entrances of sealed ruins. They are considered extensions of the Sand Guard rather than living beings, though senior Sand-Mancers sometimes develop deep reverence for particularly ancient specimens.
