Economy & Craft
The Islander economy is among the most sophisticated in Landorya, built on three interlocking foundations: maritime trade intermediation, craft production, and resource extraction. As primary operators of Landorya's ocean trade routes, the Islanders earn significant revenue simply by moving goods between civilizations that cannot move those goods themselves. The Azure Trading Company, captained by Kairo Tidewalker, is the most prominent of several large trading enterprises, though dozens of smaller family-owned operations collectively move comparable volumes of cargo.
Craft production centers on shipbuilding at the Driftwood Yards of Koralheim, which exports vessels across Landorya and represents the pinnacle of Islander technological achievement. A standard Islander trade vessel is faster, more maneuverable, and more magically enhanced than comparable ships from any other civilization. The Yards also produce specialized deep-dive equipment, navigational instruments, and the enchanted compasses known as Tidecaller's Eyes that are sought by navigators from Landorya's farthest ports.
The pearl industry at Velashra Atoll represents the most valuable single resource extraction operation. Pearl Divers' Cooperative, led by a rotating council of senior divers, manages access to the oyster beds, sets harvest quotas to prevent depletion, and negotiates prices with external buyers. Mortimer Barnacle, the Cooperative's current administrator, has expanded export markets significantly in recent years while maintaining the strict sustainability protocols that have kept the Velashra beds productive for centuries.
Fishing and kelp harvesting support both domestic consumption and export. Magically enhanced fishing nets — more durable and subtly attractive to fish — improve yields without increasing effort. The salt-processing operations on the drier outer islands produce a high-quality sea salt prized across Landorya as both a condiment and a preservative. Rosalind Tradewind oversees the most successful salt export operation, managing a fleet of small fast vessels that deliver directly to inland markets, bypassing intermediary traders and commanding premium prices.
