Fauna, Companions & Familiars
The marine and coastal fauna of the Shimmering Isles form an integral part of Islander life, economy, and spiritual practice. The relationship between Islanders and the creatures of their waters ranges from practical partnership to reverential awe, and the boundaries between domesticated companion and wild sacred being are often deliberately kept permeable.
The most culturally significant marine creature is the Tidesong Jellyfish — a large, bioluminescent species whose seasonal bloom in the Tidesong Gyre produces the primary component of the waters' famous shimmer. Islanders do not harvest these creatures but observe strict non-disturbance protocols during bloom season, treating the jellyfish swarms as living sacred gatherings. Shimmerfish, small shoaling fish that reflect bioluminescent light in coordinated patterns, are kept in glass tanks in Islander homes as both practical light sources and living art.
Pearl Crabs — large, slow-moving crustaceans that inhabit Velashra Atoll's lagoon — are protected by law and considered co-stewards of the pearl oyster beds, their foraging behavior aerating the sediment that the oysters require. The Nereid Seals of the outer islands are believed by traditional communities to carry the souls of drowned sailors. Hunting them has been forbidden within Islander territorial waters for as long as oral tradition can remember, and their presence near a vessel is considered a blessing.
On land, the most common animal companion is the Harbor Dog — a medium-sized, water-adapted breed that assists in dock work, fish-finding, and serves as a warning system for approaching storms. Islanders on the outer islands keep Stormbirds, large pelagic seabirds that bond individually with human handlers and serve as long-range message carriers. Dexter Quicksilver, the council's fastest courier, is known for maintaining a bonded pair of Stormbirds that have delivered messages to ports as far as three days' sail away. The deep-sea cephalopods documented by Professor Elara Tidereader remain outside formal companion relationships, though they occupy a growing space in Islander consciousness as potentially intelligent neighbors rather than mere fauna.
