Their mastery of maritime trade routes means that goods, knowledge, and emissaries from distant regions of Landorya routinely pass through Islander ports, making the Isles a crossroads of cultures as much as a civilization unto themselves.

The most significant contemporary diplomatic relationship is with the Eldorians. President Marisol Tidewalker was elected in part on a platform of expanded trade agreements with the Eldorians, signaling that this relationship is both economically vital and politically prominent. Islander navigators carry Eldorian goods to ports that Eldorian ships cannot easily reach, while Eldorian land-based produce supplements Islander diets that are rich in sea protein but limited in grains and livestock.

Historically, the Islanders have served as neutral arbiters between warring coastal states, their maritime control giving them leverage without requiring territorial ambition.
