Environmental Protection & Ecology
Environmental stewardship is not a policy position for the Sylvan Elves — it is the foundational premise of their existence. The bond between Sylvan Elf physiology and the health of the Eldris Forest means that ecological degradation is literally experienced by the people as illness: the Fading, in its acute form, is triggered by destruction of the forest to which an elf is particularly attuned. This physiological reality transforms what might in other civilizations be an ethical or political question into an existential one. The forest's health is the people's health, and both are the Sylvan Council's primary responsibility.
The practical expression of this commitment is a body of ecological law and practice more comprehensive than that of any other civilization in Landorya. Harvest limits for every plant, fungus, and animal resource are established by the Grove Wardens in consultation with the ecological specialists of their territories and reviewed annually in light of observed changes. Any harvest that depletes a population below sustainable levels triggers immediate mandatory cessation and remediation. Rare species receive absolute protection, monitored by specialists who report directly to the Lorekeeper's Circle. The principle of cascade awareness — understanding that every species exists in relationship with others, and that the loss of one may trigger chain effects through the ecosystem — is taught to every Sylvan child from the earliest stages of education.
Oaken Stormheart's weather-working operates within this framework as an ecological management tool: his interventions in rainfall distribution and storm mitigation are calculated not only to protect settlements but to sustain the moisture requirements of the most ecologically sensitive areas of the forest. Luna Mistwalker's dream-work contributes a different form of environmental monitoring: she maintains that the dream-weave carries early signals of ecological stress detectable through prophetic practice before they become visible through physical observation. The Sylvan Rangers' patrol mandate explicitly includes ecological monitoring alongside border security, with Rangers trained to identify signs of disease, invasive species, or magical contamination in the territories they traverse.
