Seasonal Cycle

The Sylvan Elves organize their year around the rhythms of the Eldris Forest rather than around purely astronomical markers, though the two frequently coincide. The cycle begins with the Greening — the first days of spring when the forest's renewal is perceptible even to non-magical observers, and the Sylvan Elves celebrate with the Festival of the First Planting. All companion trees planted for children born in the previous year are formally introduced to the community in ceremonies presided over by the Lorekeeper, and new Greenspeaking projects for the coming year are announced and blessed.

Summer deepens into the High Canopy Season, when patrol demands on the Rangers are at their greatest — longer days mean longer windows for potential incursions from beyond the forest — and magical workings tied to solar energy reach their annual peak. The Solstice Ceremony at Heartwood's central platform draws the entire community for a night of song, communion with ancestral spirits, and the Rite of the Listening performed by the full Sylvan Council. It is the single occasion each year when all active Council members are physically present together, and major decisions deferred from earlier months are often finalized in its aftermath.

Autumn is the season of harvest and memory. Medicinal herbs are gathered and processed for winter stores, the great fungi of Deeproot Grove are selectively harvested, and the days grow rich with the work of preservation and preparation. The Festival of Ancestral Spirits takes place on the longest night of autumn, when the Eldris Forest's bioluminescence reaches its annual peak and the boundary between the living and the dead is held to thin. Elders lead communities in communing with the ancestral presences believed to dwell within the forest's oldest trees. Winter brings a quieter rhythm: intensive teaching and lore-transmission in the tree-homes, Greenspeaking projects that work with the forest's dormant energies, and the long vigils of the Moon Feast in which Luna Mistwalker leads the community in dreamwork and prophetic interpretation across the darkest nights of the year.
