Geography
The cavern network originates beneath the Pyraxis Range and extends outward in all directions, with the upper chambers accessible from multiple surface entry points maintained and guarded by the Dragon Guard. The tunnels range in size from passages barely wide enough for a single Drakonian to vast vaulted chambers large enough to accommodate a dragon with wings partially extended. Bioluminescent Embermoss colonizes the upper reaches; deeper chambers rely on heat-glow from the magma-warmed rock itself, casting everything in a deep orange light.
Climate
Temperature and humidity vary dramatically across the cavern system. Upper chambers maintain a comfortable heat that Drakonians consider ideal for extended habitation and training. Mid-depth chambers are intensely hot and humid, breathable only by those with draconic heat resistance or appropriate magical protection. The Heartforge Depths at the lowest accessible level are beyond safe habitation for any duration and are visited only by senior Dragon Wardens on specific ceremonial occasions accompanied by bonded fire dragons.
Points of Interest
- 📍 The Hatching Grotto — the primary nesting chamber for fire-clan dragons, its walls smoothed by centuries of dragon nesting behavior
- 📍 The Dragon Guard Training Circuit — a series of obstacle-filled tunnels used to train recruits in combat, navigation, and survival in total darkness
- 📍 The Heartforge Depths Threshold — the last safely accessible point before the lethal heat zone, marked with carved warnings in five languages
- 📍 The Embermoss Galleries — naturally illuminated upper chambers carpeted in bioluminescent moss, used for meditation and healing recovery
- 📍 The Water-Clan Pools — a series of connected thermal pools in the eastern caverns where water-clan dragons maintain their nesting sites alongside the Nesting Grotto's fire chambers
History
The Ember Caverns were known to the Drakonians before the formation of any clan or the establishment of any city. The earliest Drakonian legends describe the caverns as the site where Ignatius and Tiraveth forged the first Drakonian people from elemental ore and dragon essence, making the network the most sacred geographic feature in Drakonian theology. During the clan wars, control of the primary cavern entry points was fiercely contested, as holding them meant controlling the dragon population's most critical nesting sites. The Obsidian Order's founding included explicit provisions placing the caverns under joint administration of all five clans.
Legend & Lore
The Heartforge Depths legend is central to Drakonian creation mythology. Elder dragon-priests teach that in the deepest accessible point, a single perfectly spherical chamber exists called the First Forge, where the stone floor still bears the impression of Jormungandr's serpentine body from when the forge-god coiled in that place and sang the world's metals into being. Dragon Wardens who have reached the threshold report that bonded dragons become agitated beyond that point, straining toward the depths as if called, which the Wardens interpret as evidence that the legend describes a real place.
Life & Culture
The upper Ember Caverns are continuously occupied by Dragon Guard training companies rotating through six-week immersion courses, where recruits learn to navigate by thermal feel, fight in low visibility, and work in close proximity to nesting drakes without triggering defensive aggression. The nesting chambers are monitored by resident Dragon Wardens who track clutch development through the entire incubation cycle. The Embermoss Galleries have developed an unexpected secondary use as recovery wards: the cave's stable temperature and the moss's faint bioluminescent calm make it an unusually effective environment for Drakonians healing from fire-wound trauma.
