Geography

Umbraholm sprawls through a labyrinthine cave system beneath the Black Spire caldera, its chambers interconnected by passages hewn from the obsidian-rich rock over centuries. The deepest chambers reach close to an ancient magma reservoir that provides geothermal warmth and powers the Voidsteel forges. The city has no surface-level presence save for three concealed ventilation shafts and two heavily guarded tunnel entrances, both disguised within natural rock formations and known only to shadow clan members and approved visitors.

Climate

Umbraholm maintains a constant cool darkness broken only by the dim bioluminescent glow of cultivated Embermoss patches and the blue-black shimmer of Voidsteel furnaces. Temperatures are stable and cool in the residential chambers, rising dramatically near the forge district. The absence of natural light cycles has given Umbraholm's inhabitants a heightened sensitivity to other temporal cues, leading to a complex internal timekeeping system based on pressure changes and volcanic tremor rhythms.

History

Umbraholm grew from a shadow clan refuge established during the Dragon Schism, when the shadow faction sought defensible territory that could not be easily assaulted by the numerically superior fire and earth clans. The natural cave system beneath the Black Spire proved ideal, and the shadow clan fortified it over decades before the Obsidian Order's founding made such separatism unnecessary. Rather than abandoning the site after unification, the shadow clan expanded it into a permanent city, securing for themselves the Seat of Shadows on the Order and making Umbraholm the institutional home of all Drakonian intelligence operations.

Legend & Lore

Shadow clan elders speak of a deeper passage beneath the lowest Voidsteel forge called the Unlit Way, a tunnel that supposedly extends downward without end into a place where the absence of light becomes a physical substance with weight and texture. Three recorded expeditions were sent to map it; none returned beyond the first kilometer, and the scouts who turned back reported hearing voices in a language that was neither Drakonian nor Draconic. The passage is now sealed with Voidsteel doors and the key destroyed.

Life & Culture

Umbraholm's residents live on inverted schedules relative to the surface world, operating during what outsiders would call deep night and resting during the day-hours that have no meaning underground. Social bonds run exceptionally deep in the shadow clan, as the isolation of underground life requires profound mutual trust. The Seat of Shadows on the Obsidian Order ensures that Umbraholm holds disproportionate political influence relative to its size, and the city's forge-masters are among the wealthiest Drakonians alive, commanding premium prices for the Voidsteel weapons no other city can produce.
