Geography

The basalt column on which Wyrmrest Spire stands rises approximately four hundred meters from the valley floor, its sides too sheer for conventional climbing. Access is exclusively by dragon-flight or by a single internal staircase bored through the basalt itself, seven hundred and twelve steps ascending from a guarded entrance at the column's base. The citadel atop the column is built from obsidian-reinforced stone, its exterior terraces wide enough to serve as dragon landing platforms.

Climate

The Valley of Smoke produces near-constant updrafts as geothermal vents along the valley floor release superheated gases, creating a perpetual atmospheric shimmer visible from the Spire's upper galleries. Dragon Wardens stationed here develop exceptional ability to read wind and thermal patterns, skills that serve them well when tracking migrating dragon populations across the volcanic highlands. Winters are fierce at the summit, with ice occasionally forming on the outer terraces before the dragons' warmth melts it by dawn.

Points of Interest

  • 📍 The Genealogical Archive — eleven floors of fire-etched metal plates recording every confirmed dragon bloodline in Drakonian history
  • 📍 The Warden Elder's Chamber — office and quarters of the Dragon Warden leader, currently occupied by Myrathis Embervow
  • 📍 The Watching Terraces — open-air observation platforms used for monitoring dragon population movements across the Valley of Smoke
  • 📍 The Signal Beacon — the primary node of the Flame Lattice, able to relay messages to every other beacon in the network within hours
  • 📍 The First Bonding Commemorative — a carved obsidian panel depicting Tiraveth's original gift of the Dragonsoul Pact, the oldest artwork in the Spire

History

Wyrmrest Spire began as a simple watchtower during the clan wars, its elevated position making it invaluable for spotting enemy movements across the valley. After the Obsidian Order's founding, the tower was expanded over several centuries into the current citadel, with the genealogical archive developing organically as Dragon Wardens began keeping systematic records of hatchling bonds and elemental lineages. The archive today is considered irreplaceable, and the Spire is one of only four Drakonian structures with a standing Dragon Guard garrison of any size.

Legend & Lore

Dragon Warden tradition holds that on the night of each winter solstice, if the valley clouds part and the stars are visible, a ghostly dragon circles the Spire in slow silence, too large to be any living breed in the current archive. Some Wardens call it the First Dragon, a creature that predates Tiraveth's organized creation, still returning to what may have been its original roosting site before the basalt column was quarried for construction. It never lands, never responds to Drakonic calls, and vanishes before sunrise.

Life & Culture

Life in Wyrmrest Spire is defined by the dual rhythms of archival scholarship and active field warden duty. Resident Wardens rotate between weeks of painstaking genealogical record-keeping — updating lineage charts in precise angular Drakonian script on Ignaelite plates — and weeks of aerial patrol on dragonback across the Valley of Smoke and adjacent highlands. The elder Myrathis Embervow is famous for conducting briefings while simultaneously dictating updates to three scribes, and her comprehensive knowledge of dragon family lines is said to exceed even the archive's formal records.
