The Coral Cathedral sits on the deepest accessible ledge of the Aqua Abyss, surrounded by the Aqua Abyss gardens of cultivated kelp-forests and hydrothermal vent clusters. Its position at the water column's deepest navigable point means that all acoustic frequencies emitted from its resonance chambers travel upward through the water table, reaching every Water elemental settlement in the kingdom and beyond. The cathedral's roots extend hundreds of metres into the trench sediment, anchoring it against the deep-current surges that periodically sweep the Abyss.

The Aqua Abyss at the cathedral's depth experiences near-total darkness broken only by bioluminescence, extreme pressure, and the warmth of nearby hydrothermal vents. The cathedral's interior is maintained by continuous Tide-Weaver attunement at warmer temperatures and lower effective pressure than the surrounding trench water, creating an environment accessible to Water elementals across a wide range of elemental compositions. During Tide-Blessing ceremonies, the resonance output of the assembled Siren-Dolphins and Tide-Weavers temporarily alters the water chemistry in the surrounding Abyss.

The earliest forms of the Coral Cathedral predate the Water Kingdom's formal founding, suggesting that the Aqua Abyss location was recognized as sacred before Mareas organized the first Water elementals into a political structure. Mareas incorporated the existing formations into her deliberate cultivation program, adding the resonance-tuned nave arches and the Siren-Dolphin Choir Alcoves during the first century of the kingdom. The Tide-Rift Skirmish with the Earth Kingdom caused structural fractures in two of the cathedral's oldest arches, which were re-grown over the following two centuries but remain distinguishable by their slightly different coral colouration.

The most ancient Tide-Weaver traditions hold that the Coral Cathedral is not a building at all but a creature: the largest coral organism in existence, which has been alive since before the Deep Earth was inhabited. According to this tradition, the cathedral agreed to allow itself to be shaped into a spiritual centre by Mareas because it recognised in Water elementals the only minds capable of appreciating what it already was. Those Tide-Weavers who spend the most time in the cathedral's deepest chambers sometimes report that the coral responds to their moods, brightening with satisfaction when a ceremony goes well and dimming when conflict enters the space.

The Coral Cathedral operates as an active spiritual centre throughout the year, with daily resonance meditations conducted by rotating groups of Tide-Weavers maintaining the structure's attunement. The grandest activity occurs during the triennial Tide-Blessing ceremony, which draws Water elementals from across the kingdom and beyond, including delegations from other elemental kingdoms who experience the ceremony as observers. Siren-Dolphins arrive for these ceremonies without being summoned, navigating to the cathedral through deep-current pathways as if drawn by the approaching ceremony's pre-resonance. The Equilibrium Guard maintains a respectful presence at the cathedral's outer approaches but does not enter the sacred interior.
