Thornwall occupies a geological transition zone between the Earth Kingdom's Terran Deep and the Fire Kingdom's Pyroclastic Expanse, where coal-rich sedimentary strata are interlaced with fire-veined earth that channels geothermal energy in concentrated streams. This dual geology produces both the mines' extraordinary resource yield and the harsh environmental conditions that only Earth-Fire hybrid elementals can navigate comfortably without elemental protective equipment. The network has no single entrance but dozens of access shafts distributed across both kingdom territories.

The Thornwall environment varies dramatically between upper transit corridors, which are cool and mineral-rich like the broader Terran Deep, and active extraction fronts near fire-vein seams, where temperatures reach levels that would harm most non-Fire elementals without protection. The Miner's Guild maintains climate regulation infrastructure throughout the upper and mid-level network, but the deepest active zones are left at natural temperature as a consequence of the fire-vein proximity. Explosion risks from coal-gas accumulation are managed through ventilation systems developed by the Guild over centuries.

The earliest human account of the Thornwall mines appears in the oldest Miner's Guild records, which acknowledge without shame that they found the network already partially excavated and simply continued where earlier, unknown miners had stopped. Whether those earlier miners were pre-Kingdom elementals, creatures with intelligence not preserved in any other record, or something else entirely is a question the Guild treats as interesting but not operationally relevant. The network has been in continuous use for as long as the Elemental Kingdoms have existed, and its output has supported both the Fire Kingdom's forges and the broader Elemental economy without interruption through every inter-kingdom conflict, a practical necessity that has made the mines a de facto neutral zone even during the Ashfall War.
