A typical Burrowtown is carved into and around a hillside in the fertile river valleys of the Central Plains, with homes dug partially into the slope so that rooftop gardens blend seamlessly with the hillside above. Beneath the main settlement, extensive tunnel networks radiate from a central hub, serving as grain vaults, communal gathering halls, and shelters in times of Orcish raids.

Burrowtowns are deliberately sited to exploit the mild temperate climate of the Central Plains, sheltered by surrounding hills from northern winds and oriented to maximize afternoon sunlight on their terraced fields. Heavy spring rains feed the irrigation channels, and gentle winter snows blanket the fallow fields before the Rite of the First Sprout marks the new planting cycle.

The name Burrowtown traces to the earliest Halfling settlements rebuilt after the Great Flood, when the Halflings excavated into hillsides for shelter and grain storage before a single road was laid. Over generations these burrow-clusters grew into formal communities, each governed by a Council of Elders elected by popular vote. Today the Confederation of Burrowtowns spans approximately 120,000 Halflings across ten major settlements, connected by river barge routes to Azaria and mountain passes to the Dwarven Holds. The rotating office of High Burrowmaster, held by the eldest council member of the most populous town, coordinates inter-town matters without eroding local autonomy, a balance Halfling diplomats proudly cite when hosting peace talks between larger nations.

Halfling oral tradition holds that the very first Burrowtown was not shaped by hands alone but was offered by the earth itself in answer to a melody sung by a halfling elder in the aftermath of the Great Flood. The hills, moved by the song, curved their slopes inward to form the first rounded doorway, and the soil stayed loose and workable in that place ever after. Halflings still perform what they call the Opening Song whenever a new Burrowtown is founded, pressing their palms flat against the hillside and waiting in silence for a faint warmth beneath the stone before the first spade breaks ground. In all recorded history, no Burrowtown founded with that rite has ever suffered a failed first harvest.

Life in a Burrowtown begins before sunrise, when whichever household holds the week's Baker's Rotation lights the communal oven so the smell of fresh bread drifts across the cobbled lanes by dawn. Farmers are already in the terraced fields tending Runic Plows and checking growth-rune markers before the rest of the settlement stirs. The midday market draws traders, storytellers, and apprentices learning herbal tincture-craft from senior Healers. Afternoons belong to craftwork, militia drills, and the meticulous tunnel inspections that keep the grain vaults clean and dry. Evenings are the true heart of Burrowtown culture: long communal feasts of honey-glazed root pies and elderflower ale, followed by Story-Weaving circles in which oral histories are recited and embellished with each passing generation, and Council debates that can stretch past midnight with passionate but always courteous argument.
