Moonriver rises in the high moorlands north of the Silverstream Basin, collecting meltwater from seasonal snowfields before descending through a series of widening valleys toward the lowland river network. It runs roughly parallel to the Silverstream for much of its course before converging with the Crystal River at the Great Confluence outside Aqualis. Its banks are lined with Lumen-Reeds that reach exceptional densities, their bioluminescent glow reflecting off the transparent water and creating the river's characteristic silver appearance after dark.

The Moonriver corridor experiences the temperate, high-humidity conditions of the broader Naiad territories, with misting mornings caused by the temperature differential between the cold highland water and warmer basin air. Summer evenings along the lower river are renowned for their stillness, when the water's surface becomes so calm that navigators can use it as a mirror to read star positions, a technique central to traditional Naiad celestial navigation.

Moonriver has been inhabited by Naiad river-state communities since the Age of Currents, when the first submersibles navigated its transparent waters to map its deepest channels. The river played a critical logistical role during the Era of the Great Flood, when Naiad and Sylvan Guardian forces used its reliable current to transport emergency flood-control equipment to threatened lowlands. Its extraordinary water clarity makes it the preferred testing ground for new Current-Scrying Orb calibrations, and the Guild of River Scholars maintains a permanent research station on its northern bank.

The river's name is attributed to an ancient tale of a young Naiad navigator who became lost in fog during the Age of Springs and followed the reflected light of the moon on the water's surface to find her way home. Upon reaching the Great Confluence, she is said to have declared that the river had spoken to her in moonlight, guiding her through the darkness with the memory of every traveler who had crossed its surface before. The Echo Sages preserved her account as the founding principle of Naiad celestial navigation, and the river has borne her words as its name ever since. Travelers who bathe in Moonriver under a full moon are said to receive a fragment of that original water-memory, a fleeting sense of direction and clarity that fades by dawn.

Settlements along Moonriver are unhurried places, shaped by the river's characteristic calm. Aqua-Healers prize its water for therapeutic preparations, and the healing elixirs brewed from Moonriver water infused with Lumen-Reed nectar are traded as far as the Nereid coast. Dawn along the river is marked by communal resonance meditation on the banks, where Naiads merge briefly with the water to absorb the night's accumulated memories.
