Geography

The Obsidian River Head is situated at the southern extreme of Naiad-claimed territory, where the confederation's border meets the volcanic foothills of the Drakonian range. The spring emerges from a fractured basalt shelf at the base of a low escarpment, the fissure kept perpetually moist by geothermal pressure from below. The water pools briefly in a basalt basin before flowing south and east as the infant Obsidian River. The surrounding terrain is dark rock and sparse mineral-tolerant vegetation, with occasional steam vents marking the geothermal activity beneath the surface.

Climate

The Obsidian River Head site is warmer than its latitude would suggest, heated by the geothermal activity that feeds the spring. The air around the source carries a faint mineral sulfur note and is perpetually humid. Frost rarely forms at the site even in winter, and the basalt rock retains heat into evening, making the spring warm to the touch. This thermal peculiarity is understood by Naiad Spring Keepers as evidence of Torrentis's ongoing presence, her warrior's fire keeping the water from going cold.

  • 📍 Steam Vent Circle — a ring of geothermal vents around the spring used by Echo Sages to conduct deep-earth resonance readings
  • 📍 Deep-Current Warriors' Memorial — obsidian pillars engraved with the names of Naiads lost in defense of the river, erected after the Obsidian River Skirmishes
  • 📍 Boundary Marker of Torrentis — the southernmost official Naiad territorial stone, inscribed with a passage from the Chronicle of the Deep

History

The Obsidian River Head has functioned as both a sacred site and a military staging ground since the earliest recorded Naiad expansion south. During the Obsidian River Skirmishes with Drakonia, the spring site was the primary rallying point for Naiad defensive forces, and the Submersible Phalanx units that launched the most celebrated covert operations of the conflict were blessed at the Warrior's Basin before each deployment. The Treaty of the Veined Stone designates the spring as sovereign Naiad territory beyond negotiation, a condition the Naiads insisted upon before any shared mining agreement could be reached. The Deep-Current Warriors' Memorial was constructed in the treaty's aftermath and has since become the most visited military pilgrimage site in the confederation.

Legend & Lore

Naiad tradition identifies the Obsidian River Head as the spring from which the Wellmother Torrentis herself emerged during the Age of Springs, the last and fiercest of the Seven Wellmothers to take form. According to the Chronicle of the Deep, Torrentis did not weep like her sisters but instead struck the volcanic rock with her fist, and the spring burst upward in response to her force rather than her grief. Her first words upon emerging were not a blessing but a warning: that the river she had made would be fought over, and that her children must be ready. The Deep-Current Warriors consider themselves her direct heirs, and the pre-mission ritual of submerging both hands to the wrist in the Warrior's Basin is described as making contact with Torrentis's original blow.

Life & Culture

The Obsidian River Head is not a settlement site — its terrain and proximity to contested territory make permanent habitation impractical — but it is staffed year-round by a rotating cadre of Spring Keepers and Aqua Guard sentinels. The Spring Keepers monitor the spring's mineral composition using Purity Runes and maintain the sacred site's physical structures. Aqua Guard patrols use the Warrior's Basin as a field base and conduct navigation exercises in the upper Obsidian River channels. Military pilgrims, typically River Sentinels or Submersible Phalanx operatives seeking a blessing before deployment or a moment of reflection after returning from the contested border zones, arrive in small groups and camp in the basalt hollow east of the spring, leaving offerings of Lumen-Crystals at Torrentis's shrine before departing.
