Appearance

Physical: Rowan has the lean, mobile quality of someone who walks between settlements rather than riding, and the tan line of a person outdoors in all weather. His sandy brown hair is longer than is common and perpetually pushed back from his face; his fingers are calloused at the tips from string-work and at the base of the index finger from the bow of his travel fiddle.

Clothing: Layered for weather, with the outer layer always something he is not precious about, since the road is rough on fabrics. He carries a wide-brimmed hat that has been repaired along one brim and a travel pack that is organized with the precise logic of someone who has packed and unpacked it several thousand times.

Distinguishing Marks: A lute string tied around his left wrist that he has replaced with a new string every three months for twenty years; the original string broke at a performance he considers the best work he ever did, and he cannot quite bring himself to change the habit.

Relationships

  • Grover Ashenbrew - The brewer at whose establishment he performs most frequently when in Thistledown; a comfortable arrangement built on Rowan bringing the audience and Grover providing the setting, formalized over twelve years into something that approximates a standing contract
  • Wren Boulderwick - The Story-Weaver with whom he has an ongoing creative exchange — she has provided him with historical accounts he has set to music, and he has performed at her public recitations when their schedules align; neither has formally acknowledged that the other's work has influenced their own
  • Lena Dustfoot - A Halfling he met on the road between Thistledown and Merryvale five years ago who was traveling in the other direction; they have intersected three times since and exchanged maps, stories, and market information each time without explicitly planning to meet again

Personality

  • Collects stories the way some people collect objects — with a systematic curiosity that is always slightly taking inventory of whatever situation he finds himself in, and a memory for narrative detail that is both professionally useful and occasionally inconvenient to people who would prefer to be forgotten
  • Holds a performing confidence that is entirely absent in one-on-one conversations he has not prepared for; he can hold a market square of two hundred Halflings in complete attention and becomes slightly awkward when asked a direct personal question
  • Fundamentally restless in a way that has long since stopped reading as a character flaw and settled into simple identity — he has tried living in one place three times, the most recent ending four years ago, and each time concluded that the restlessness is not a symptom of anything

Backstory

Rowan grew up in Thistledown in a musical family and left at twenty-two intending to spend two years traveling the inter-Burrowtown circuit before settling down. He has not settled down. He has, however, become the best-traveled Halfling in the current generation, having performed in all ten major Burrowtowns, visited the Elven border settlements twice, and once traveled as far as a Human Imperial waystation in Azaria where his performance was received with more surprise than enthusiasm but received nonetheless. He makes instruments in the winter months and sells them in the spring, supplementing performance income with enough consistency that he is financially stable in a way that does not look stable from the outside.

Daily Life

Rowan's life is scheduled around market days and festival calendars across the Confederation. He plans his seasonal circuit six months in advance and walks between most settlements, adding occasional barge transport when carrying newly made instruments. In Thistledown for the winter he maintains a small workshop for instrument-making and teaches informal music sessions that he does not charge for and does not advertise, relying on word of mouth that is by now very reliable. He performs evenings at the market-hall when he is in town and uses daytime for the instrument work.

Secret

During his journey to the Azarian waystation eight years ago, Rowan heard a song being performed by a Human minstrel that contained a specific melodic phrase — a phrase that appears in three separate Halfling folk songs that, by the Story-Weavers' records, predate any known Halfling-Human contact. He transcribed both versions that night and has carried them with him since, unable to explain the connection and unwilling to bring it to the Story-Weavers' Circle because he cannot tell the story without implying the Circle's historical record is wrong.

Story Hooks

  • 1 Rowan asks travelers heading toward the Azarian border to listen for a specific melody if they encounter any Human performers, and to record it if they hear it — he provides a written notation of the phrase and a fairly good explanation of why he wants to know without providing the full context
  • 2 He has been commissioned by an anonymous buyer in Merryvale to produce a specific instrument to a very specific design that does not match any Halfling instrument tradition he knows — the commission note includes a detailed drawing that resembles a Dwarven design with modifications that appear to be functional rather than aesthetic

Narrative Value

Rowan is the Halfling Confederation's living connective tissue between settlements and the outside world — a mobile information source, cultural exchanger, and keeper of an unexplained musical mystery with cross-civilizational implications. His extensive travel makes him an effective map and contact resource for players.
