RENDOR THE APPRENTICE DREAMER
Order of the StarlightAdvanced Dream-Walking Apprentice, Ministry of Aetheric Sciences
RENDOR THE APPRENTICE DREAMER serves as Advanced Dream-Walking Apprentice, Ministry of Aetheric Sciences within Order of the Starlight. RENDOR THE APPRENTICE DREAMER is identified as Aetherian. Primary residence: The Veil Nexus, the Astral Plateau. Known affiliation: Ministry of Aetheric Sciences. Commonly described traits include Traits: Genuinely humble about his abilities in a discipline where the practitioners he works beside are generations his senior; enthusiastic about psychic phenomena in a way that reads as naivety and periodically surprises colleagues when the enthusiasm produces substantive original observations, Mannerisms: Narrates his dream impressions immediately upon waking, to anyone present, in real-time without editing — not from indiscretion but because he has found that the act of speaking fixes impressions that otherwise dissolve; he later composes these into formal records, and Voice: Quick and earnest, with Aetherian harmonic overtones that are unusually rich for his age — practitioners say his voice sounds older than he is, which he has been told is a feature of natural Dream-Walking aptitude, and which he is still deciding whether to find encouraging.
"My master says the psychic landscape has a cartographer. I think I may have found their office. I would like to know if anyone else can see it before I knock."

Appearance
Physical: Young even by Aetherian reckoning, with the slightly translucent quality of skin whose luminescence has not yet settled into its adult pattern — his glow concentrates unpredictably, sometimes at his temples, sometimes at his sternum, rarely in both places simultaneously. His eyes are a vivid, almost electric silver that brightens sharply when he is dreaming and dims to near-grey when he is overextended, providing his instructors with a reliable fatigue indicator.
Clothing: Apprentice robes in pale grey that he has never bothered to upgrade despite having the standing to request more formal dress; he wears a Thought-Fox bonding cord at his left wrist, connecting him to his assigned companion, which he has not yet named because he and the Fox are still determining what their relationship is.
Distinguishing Marks: He has the particular look of someone who is not fully asleep or fully awake — the unfocused gaze common to Dream-Walkers is present in him at a higher baseline than usual, suggesting his threshold between waking and the psychic landscape is thinner than average.
Relationships
- Star-Sage Orinthos the Dreamer - His master, sponsor, and the person he most wants to impress and is most uncertain he can; Orinthos gives him genuine autonomy and genuine responsibility, both of which Rendor finds simultaneously gratifying and frightening
- Mirael the Aether-Initiate - They completed overlapping competency stages in the same period and share the specific bond of people who have been studied by Orinthos without fully understanding why; they compare notes on this experience with a mixture of humor and unease
- Morrith the Cradle Elder - She oversaw his resonance-matching ceremony and has visited him twice since he entered Orinthos's group to ask questions about his dream notation system that she phrases very carefully and that he answers without understanding their full significance

Backstory
Rendor completed his Rite of the First Vision at thirty-three, entering the Labyrinth of Thought and producing, unprompted, a twelve-layer psychic map of his own subconscious architecture with annotation notation he had invented himself. The presiding practitioner submitted the map to Star-Sage Orinthos, who requested Rendor's assignment to his research group before the Rite was formally concluded. Rendor has spent the past fourteen years as Orinthos's most active apprentice, completing his Trial of the Veil at forty-two and progressing through Dream-Walking competencies faster than any comparable student in the Ministry's recent history. He is aware that Orinthos considers him significant. He is not certain why. He suspects it has to do with his self-invented notation system, which Orinthos studied for three days and then asked to keep a copy of without explanation.
Daily Life
Rendor's schedule is built around Dream-Vigil windows — he enters controlled dream-states in the Veil Nexus's designated chambers three times per week, with his Thought-Fox companion anchoring him, and spends the remainder of his time transcribing, analyzing, and cross-referencing his observations with the Ministry's growing Dream-Walking library. He attends Orinthos's seminars and is frequently the only attendee who contributes original observations rather than questions. He is also, at Orinthos's direction, conducting a private study of the Veil Nexus's aetheric field during the Dream-Vigil periods, monitoring for anomalies his master has not yet specified.
Secret
During his most recent Dream-Vigil, Rendor entered a layer of the psychic landscape he has not reached before and found, clearly mapped and apparently waiting, a structured architecture that matches Orinthos's classified description of what he found during the Dreamer's Descent — except larger than Orinthos's account described, and with what appeared to be an entrance oriented toward Rendor specifically. He has not told Orinthos because he is not certain the map was waiting for Rendor or was drawn by him, and the difference matters.
Story Hooks
- 1 Rendor approaches outsiders for assistance with a Dream-Vigil he needs witnessed from outside the psychic landscape — he believes that what he found is accessible only with a simultaneous external anchor, and he does not want to ask Orinthos until he has independent confirmation it exists
- 2 His Thought-Fox companion refuses, for the first time since bonding, to anchor him into the Dream-Vigil state — blocking entry at the threshold — and Rendor needs help interpreting what the Fox is responding to
Narrative Value
Rendor is the Order's most promising young explorer of the psychic frontier — the apprentice whose natural aptitude has placed him at the same threshold his master reached after decades of work, and whose self-invented notation system may be the key to mapping what Orinthos could not. He provides access to Dream-Walking mechanics, the investigation of the mysterious intelligence from the Dreamer's Descent, and the perspective of someone young enough to not yet know what should be impossible.
