SOLEN AETHERSPUN

Order of the Starlight

Master Loom-Crafter, Ministry of Aetheric Sciences

SOLEN AETHERSPUN serves as Master Loom-Crafter, Ministry of Aetheric Sciences within Order of the Starlight. SOLEN AETHERSPUN is identified as Aetherian. Primary residence: Luminara, the Astral Plateau. Known affiliation: Ministry of Aetheric Sciences. Commonly described traits include Traits: Warm and technically specific in alternating registers — they can switch mid-sentence from genuine personal warmth to the precise vocabulary of Aether-Loom calibration and back again without apparent awareness of the transition, Mannerisms: Gestures are always practical rather than expressive; they physically demonstrate concepts with their hands even when words would suffice, and they cannot listen to a theoretical explanation without wanting to build a small working model of whatever is being described, and Voice: Even and pleasant, with a characteristic pause before any technical explanation during which they are visibly selecting the version of the explanation most likely to be useful to the person they are talking to.

Aetherian Age: 67 Non-binary

"The Loom does not make enchantments. It makes the space where an enchantment can happen. What fills that space is not always what you put in."

Appearance

Physical: Of middle height, with the fine-boned build typical of Aetherians and hands that betray their occupation — nimble, ink-stained at the fingertips, and in constant motion even at rest, tracing the ghost of a loom-thread pattern through the air when they are thinking. Their luminescence is a warm gold-white that shimmers rhythmically, tuned over years of Aether-Loom work to pulse in time with nearby aetheric currents.

Clothing: A craftperson's apron over a plain linen undertunic, both layered with pockets holding tools specific to Aether-Loom maintenance: calibration crystals, spare shuttle-cores, a small resonance gauge worn on a cord around the neck. They keep a length of Veil-Silk thread looped around one wrist as a working sample reference.

Distinguishing Marks: The sigil-markings across their chest and collarbones have a woven appearance — horizontal-and-vertical interlacement patterns rather than the flowing organic forms more common in their age cohort, shaped by decades of exposure to the Loom's geometric aetheric output.

Relationships

  • Corvain the Thought-Smith - Creative collaborator and close friend; Corvain's Thought-Construct research and Solen's Loom prototypes have overlapping theoretical territory, and they have been meeting weekly for two years to explore whether a Loom can be built that produces a Thought-Construct directly rather than requiring a practitioner's channeling as intermediary
  • Arch-Luminary Aelindra the Radiant - Solen built the Loom that produces the Veil-Silk for the Arch-Luminary's sigil-embroidered mantle and has been called to the Conclave's Loom maintenance work for forty years; a relationship of professional mutual respect in which Aelindra has been notably more curious about Solen's prototype specifications than standard maintenance would warrant
  • Tessara of the Academy Light - A former student Solen mentored during a Star-Academy residency program; Tessara's academic career and Solen's craft career have diverged significantly, but Tessara still returns to the workshop occasionally to think out loud, which Solen considers one of the higher compliments their work receives

Personality

  • Traits: Warm and technically specific in alternating registers — they can switch mid-sentence from genuine personal warmth to the precise vocabulary of Aether-Loom calibration and back again without apparent awareness of the transition
  • Mannerisms: Gestures are always practical rather than expressive; they physically demonstrate concepts with their hands even when words would suffice, and they cannot listen to a theoretical explanation without wanting to build a small working model of whatever is being described
  • Voice: Even and pleasant, with a characteristic pause before any technical explanation during which they are visibly selecting the version of the explanation most likely to be useful to the person they are talking to

Backstory

Solen came to Aether-Loom craft through an unusual path: a failed Trial of the Veil at age twenty-four that produced not the expected mental ordeal but a complete, detailed aetheric schematic of a Loom variant their presiding Star-Sage had never seen. The Trial identified Solen not as unsuited to Star-Sage candidacy but as oriented toward a different form of mastery. They apprenticed with the Order's then-senior Loom-Crafter for fifteen years, developed three new Loom architectures by the time of their master's retirement, and have since built every major Aether-Loom currently operating in Luminara. Their newest prototype runs at twice the standard enchantment-throughput and makes a sound their colleagues describe as humming and they describe as singing.

Daily Life

Solen arrives at the Loom Workshop before Dawn-Attunement, spending the first hour in quiet calibration of the facility's seven production Looms — a process they describe as checking in with the machinery, which practitioners who have worked alongside them stop finding unusual after the first week. Morning and afternoon sessions involve active construction, repair commissions from other Ministries, and supervision of two junior loom-apprentices. Evening hours are given to prototype development, specifically the eighth-generation Loom design that they believe can sustain Thought-Construct-level aetheric complexity in the enchantments it produces.

Secret

The eighth-generation Loom prototype produces, intermittently during extended runs, an aetheric output that does not match any enchantment Solen programmed into it. The outputs are coherent, stable, and do not match any known working in the Archive — they are genuinely original. Solen is not yet certain whether the Loom is producing them or receiving them. They have not told Corvain, who is closest to understanding what this means, because they are not ready to share the possibility that the Loom may have developed something resembling creative output.

Story Hooks

  • 1 Solen requests outside assistance in tracking the source of the Loom's unexplained outputs — specifically, someone who can operate a calibration instrument at the Veil Nexus while Solen runs the Loom simultaneously, checking whether the outputs correlate with ley-line fluctuations
  • 2 An Aether-Loom in a distant settlement begins producing the same unexplained outputs as Solen's prototype despite having no design connection to it — and the settlement's practitioners have been using them as functional enchantments for weeks without realizing they should not be possible

Narrative Value

Solen is the Order's foremost practical magitech craftsperson and an unexpected node in a storyline about the boundary between tool and consciousness; they provide access to the Order's physical magical infrastructure and carry a secret that may represent either a breakthrough or a warning.
