VORTHIS STORMTOUCHED

Order of the Starlight

Senior Researcher, Aether-Storm Phenomena Division

VORTHIS STORMTOUCHED serves as Senior Researcher, Aether-Storm Phenomena Division within Order of the Starlight. VORTHIS STORMTOUCHED is identified as Aetherian. Primary residence: The outer terraces of Luminara, the Astral Plateau. Known affiliation: Ministry of Aetheric Sciences. Commonly described traits include Traits: Enthusiastic in a way that occasionally frightens people unfamiliar with the subject of his enthusiasm; entirely comfortable with danger as an occupational condition and sometimes forgets that this is not universal, Mannerisms: Keeps one hand free at all times on the outside terraces — reaching habit from decades of needing to stabilize equipment during unexpected aetheric surges; he greets novel phenomena with a researcher's joy that is genuine, visible, and occasionally inappropriate given the novelty's destructive potential, and Voice: Brisk and loud enough to carry over moderate wind, tuned by years of calling observations to recorders across a Storm front; the harmonic resonance in his speech has an arrhythmic quality matching his luminescence fluctuation that other practitioners find easy to identify at distance.

Aetherian Age: 291 Male

"Every Storm is different. These eleven are different in the same way. That is the most terrifying sentence I know how to write."

Appearance

Physical: Tall even among Aetherians, weathered in a way that manifests as a slight roughening of his translucent skin — texture rather than color, the accumulated marking of decades spent on the Astral Plateau during active Aether-Storms. His luminescence shifts erratically in rapid blue-white pulses, an acquired aetheric arrhythmia he describes as cosmetically unfortunate and functionally interesting. His eyes are a near-colorless silver that, during a Storm event, reflect the storm's color rather than his own.

Clothing: Heavy-weather Veil-Silk with multiple layers of anti-cascade warding stitched into the inner lining — protection against the aetheric surge that accompanies a direct Storm front. He wears six Astral Scopes of varying apertures on a bandolier across his chest, each calibrated for a different layer of Storm activity.

Distinguishing Marks: The sigil-markings on his scalp — rare, as most Aetherians develop them only on the body — appeared after his third deliberate Storm immersion and have not changed pattern since; scholars who have seen them describe them as unlike any known sigil-development progression.

Relationships

  • Nythara Duskveil - His archival collaborator; she holds the only complete record of historical Storm events, and he has been mining her archive for anomalous-Storm documentation with increasing urgency as the count reaches eleven — she has begun asking why he needs specifically those records, and he has not yet answered
  • Arch-Luminary Aelindra the Radiant - She has read his unpublished work on the anomalous Storms and summoned him to a private audience three times; she has not told him what the private audiences were about and he has not told her what he suspects about the anomalies — a shared circumspection neither has named
  • Imara the Woven-Whole - His healer and, by necessity, his closest personal relationship; she has treated him for post-immersion aetheric surge twice and delivered a clinical assessment of his long-term prognosis that he has chosen to interpret as more optimistic than she intended

Personality

  • Mannerisms: Keeps one hand free at all times on the outside terraces — reaching habit from decades of needing to stabilize equipment during unexpected aetheric surges; he greets novel phenomena with a researcher's joy that is genuine, visible, and occasionally inappropriate given the novelty's destructive potential

Backstory

Vorthis began his career as a standard Aetheric Manipulation practitioner and discovered, during his first major Aether-Storm at age forty, that he could perceive the Storm's internal structure with a clarity no instrument available at the time could match. He redirected his career entirely. Over two and a half centuries he has observed one hundred and twelve Storms, survived four direct immersions, documented a predictive model for Storm formation that is now standard across the Ministry, and identified a subset of Storm events — he counts eleven — that do not match the model at all and that he has never been able to explain. His published work on the eleven anomalous Storms was not accepted for the Grand Symposium proceedings. He considers this a data point about the proceedings.

Daily Life

Vorthis monitors the ley-line array on the outer terraces every morning, reviewing overnight readings for the micro-signatures that precede a Storm event by six to eighteen hours. Storm days are consumed entirely by observation — recording, instrument maintenance during the event, and data compilation afterward. Non-Storm days involve analysis, correspondence with researchers at allied civilizations who have observed analogous phenomena, and ongoing work on a theoretical model for the eleven anomalous events. He has not slept indoors during a Storm in over a century, which he considers a research preference rather than an eccentricity.

Secret

The eleven anomalous Storms are not random. Vorthis has mapped their occurrence across two centuries of records and found a pattern: each one preceded, by between three days and three weeks, a significant event in the Order's history — a rift opening, a Star-Sage death, the signing of the Celestial Accord. The pattern predicts an anomalous Storm within the next thirty days. He has not publicized this because the next event in the predicted sequence, if the pattern holds, will be something that ends the Order.

Story Hooks

  • 1 Vorthis requests that outsiders accompany him to an observation point outside the Astral Plateau's warding perimeter during an anomalous Storm — he needs independent witnesses who are not bound by Ministry reporting requirements
  • 2 He approaches outsiders with a sealed document and a specific instruction: if he does not return from the next Storm immersion, deliver the document to Arch-Luminary Aelindra personally, bypassing the Ministry chain of command

Narrative Value

Vorthis is the Order's foremost expert on Aether-Storms and carries a predictive secret about a civilizational-scale event; he functions as a reluctant prophet and as the character whose research connects the Order's immediate present to forces operating on a geological rather than biographical timescale.
