Appearance
Physical: Barely larger than a large hound, with the compact, unfinished proportions of a Sphinx who has not grown into her body. Her lion fur is almost white with faint rainbow iridescence from Wyrm-Egg essence still dissipating from her cells. Her wings are mostly pinfeathers, not yet fully fledged.
Clothing: None — hatchlings of her age do not wear adornment. She carries a collection of objects given to her by Library visitors, tucked in her wing-feathers.
Distinguishing Marks: Her human face looks approximately six years old in human terms — large eyes, round features, cycling rapidly through colours with no settled pattern. Her third eye opens and closes at random.
Relationships
- Miravel Deepread - The ancient archivist who visits specifically to observe her, bringing a single new word each visit. Thresh collects these words without understanding why they feel important.
- Aeloria Sunbreak - Has met her twice; found her frightening; is working up the courage to ask her a specific question she has not yet asked anyone else.
- Lyss the Resonant - The only older Sphinx who treats her as a peer rather than a subject. They have an ongoing competition to find the strangest sound in the Library's walls.

Backstory
Thresh hatched seventy-three years ago from an Essence Pair bonding conducted during an intense Star-storm, which nursery scholars believe infused her egg with residual celestial energy. She has already exhibited three abilities no Sphinx hatchling has shown in recorded memory: spontaneous Glyphic Spiral writing she could not have been taught, a sonic roar capable of activating dormant Echo-Stone, and a third eye that on one occasion projected an image rather than reading one. Miravel Deepread visits the nursery twice a month — something she has never done for any previous hatchling.
Daily Life
Thresh's days are structured by the nursery schedule: Sphinxian grammar, basic riddling forms, and the names of the divine triad. She escapes these lessons to explore the Library's lower corridors — forbidden territory she has entered seventeen times anyway. She interrogates every visitor who passes the nursery wing and has accumulated a collection of small objects left by visitors who tend to part with things when faced with sustained hatchling questioning.
Secret
Thresh can read the classified replay section of the Living Archive. She has not realised this is unusual — she assumed all Sphinxes could. She has been watching the classified content Miravel sealed for three months and has not told anyone because no one has asked.
Story Hooks
- 1 Thresh approaches outsiders visiting the Library and asks them a riddle she says 'came out of the wall' — it matches a prophecy from the sealed Living Archive that no one outside the nursery should be able to access.
- 2 Thresh has gone missing from the nursery. All evidence points to her having followed an Echo-Bat into the unmapped cavern system Lyss discovered, carrying the collection of objects she has accumulated.
Narrative Value
Thresh is a chaos element and mystery delivery mechanism — she carries information she should not have and asks questions no adult will answer. Her prodigious abilities plant seeds for a much larger storyline about the Sphinxes' true origin.
