The Celestials

The Root-Walker, Foremost Scholar of Terra's Domain

DREVANTHOS EARTH-BOUND serves as The Root-Walker, Foremost Scholar of Terra's Domain within The Celestials. DREVANTHOS EARTH-BOUND is identified as Frostborn. Primary residence: Sphere-Forests of Eldara. Known affiliation: Celestial Order. Commonly described traits include Traits: Approaches Terra's domain with Frostborn directness — through physical contact with material reality rather than through texts and resonance instruments — which gives his theoretical work a grounded specificity that Order scholars trained in the standard method consistently find their instruments confirming but could not have generated themselves, Mannerisms: Thinks in geological time, casually — three centuries of working with terrain that changes on decade-scales has calibrated his sense of urgency to a timescale that requires active recalibration when discussing matters that humans consider urgent within a generation, and Voice: Unhurried, with the quality of someone for whom being right is more important than being first to speak, and who has had three centuries of practice at the specific patience required when you are the oldest living person in a conversation and you know it.

Frostborn Age: 312 Male

"I came for two years. That was three hundred and twelve years ago. The trees are better company than most institutions and considerably more honest about their intentions."

Appearance

Physical: A Frostborn of full mature build — broad, dense, built for cold environments — who has spent three centuries in the temperate warmth of the Sphere-Forests of Eldara and shows it in the specific way that people who live against their native climate do: entirely adapted, entirely at ease, and occasionally visibly aware of how far from home they are in a way that passes quickly. His skin carries the Frostborn blue-grey undertone; his hands are always stained with the amber resin of living-stardust trees, which he does not remove between study sessions.

Working Dress: Senior Monk deep blue with the Terra-domain sash, worn in the Frostborn manner — loose enough for movement, practical pockets added by his own hand over three centuries, the fabric replaced periodically but the cut unchanged since his second decade.

Distinguishing Marks: Luminous Stags of Eldara come to within touching distance of Drevanthos in the forest. Three specific individuals have been present near his study-clearing for over a century. Members of the Order who attempt to approach the same Stags without Drevanthos find they maintain a standard wild-creature distance.

Relationships

  • Terra - The Celestial whose domain Drevanthos experiences through Frostborn physical directness rather than through the Ætheric Net — he has received direct Terra-resonance impressions on two occasions without mediation, which the Circle of Five regards as rare enough to be documented separately; he describes the experience as the ground explaining itself
  • Luminous Stags of Eldara - Three specific individuals who have been present near his study-clearing for over a century; he has been quietly certain for forty years that they have specific memories rather than mere animal recognition, and has been conducting what he describes as a non-intrusive longitudinal observation study — he watches them, notes their behaviour, does not disturb their patterns
  • The Circle of Five — Terra Domain - The scholarly authority whose knowledge he exceeds and who manages this institutional complexity with grace — the current Circle member consults him regularly and frames the relationship as advisory-from-above, which Drevanthos does not object to because the distinction between senior adviser and Circle member is administrative and he has never been interested in administration

Personality

  • Traits: Approaches Terra's domain with Frostborn directness — through physical contact with material reality rather than through texts and resonance instruments — which gives his theoretical work a grounded specificity that Order scholars trained in the standard method consistently find their instruments confirming but could not have generated themselves
  • Mannerisms: Thinks in geological time, casually — three centuries of working with terrain that changes on decade-scales has calibrated his sense of urgency to a timescale that requires active recalibration when discussing matters that humans consider urgent within a generation
  • Voice: Unhurried, with the quality of someone for whom being right is more important than being first to speak, and who has had three centuries of practice at the specific patience required when you are the oldest living person in a conversation and you know it

Backstory

Frostborn typically revere Terra and Aether as elemental forces but rarely join the Celestial Order's formal structure. Drevanthos arrived at the Sphere-Forests of Eldara three hundred and twelve years ago as a young Frostborn scholar on a two-year observation posting. He found the living-stardust trees immediately comprehensible in a way no text he had read had been, and stayed. He is the Order's oldest active member and its foremost living authority on Terra's domain. He writes in Stellascript with an ease most human scholars never achieve. The Terra-domain Circle consults him before finalising any significant terrestrial assessment, and he provides that input without attending the sessions, by sending written notes that the Circle has learned to treat as definitive.

Daily Life

Drevanthos works from a permanent study-clearing in the Sphere-Forests that the Order has maintained for him for three centuries — a clearing because the living-stardust trees, over two centuries of his presence, have arranged themselves at a consistent distance from his work area in a pattern that the Terra-domain scholars believe is responsive rather than random. He produces the Order's definitive annual Terra-domain assessment from this clearing, working through physical contact with the forest material and from observation notebooks that he has been filling in a consistent hand since his third decade. In the evenings the three Luminous Stags are present. He has not attempted to communicate with them in any formal way. He listens.

Secret

The Sphere-Forests of Eldara are growing. Slowly — an average of twenty metres per decade in all directions simultaneously — and not through natural expansion. The growth is directed: the Forests are moving toward a specific destination. Drevanthos has calculated the vector over three decades of measurement and it points directly at the Starwatch Citadel. He has not reported this because he is not certain whether it is a threat or an instruction. Terra does not do things by accident, and the Citadel is either the destination or a waypoint, and the difference matters enormously.

Story Hooks

  • 1 Characters travelling through the Sphere-Forests of Eldara encounter Drevanthos at his study-clearing and find him measuring the tree line with instruments they do not immediately recognise as surveying tools, who tells them, upon request, what he has found and what he has calculated, and who asks in return whether they have been to the Starwatch Citadel recently
  • 2 The Resonance Academy receives a written report from Drevanthos — the first unsolicited report in forty years — requesting that someone with Aether-domain spatial calibration skills come to the Sphere-Forests to verify a measurement he cannot perform alone, and specifying that the visit should be planned for three weeks from the submission date because the Forest will be in a particular configuration he cannot predict will recur

Narrative Value

Drevanthos is the Order's longest institutional memory made active — the character who knows what the Sphere-Forests were three centuries ago and what they are now and what the change means. His Frostborn relationship with Terra creates a non-standard access point to the domain's knowledge, his three-hundred-year observational record of the forest growth is the most patient data set in the current narrative, and his Luminous Stag observations introduce the question of what sacred creatures know that they have not been asked.
