Fauna, Companions & Familiars
Primary Companion Animals
| Creature | Type | Role | Bond |
|---|---|---|---|
| River Serpent | Large semi-sentient aquatic reptile | Current guide, heavy transport, ceremonial mount. | Deep empathic link; a River Serpent chooses its Naiad partner through a mutual water-merge ritual. |
| Glow-Carp | Bioluminescent fish | Illumination, ceremonial significance, food source (farmed varieties only). | Communal; Glow-Carp schools respond to Resonance Singing. |
| Mist-Hawk | Vapor-riding raptor | Aerial reconnaissance, message delivery, weather sensing. | Individual bond formed during a Sky-Merge rite (partial merger with mist). |
| Mire-Mole | Burrowing aquatic mammal | Riverbed aeration, sediment management, tunnel excavation. | Trained by Spring Keepers; loyal to their handler's water-signature. |
Secondary Fauna
- Crystal Dragonflies: Tiny, jewel-like insects that feed on Lumen-Reed nectar; their wing patterns are studied for aerodynamic insights.
- Deepwater Eels: Enormous eels inhabiting the lowest aquifers; rarely seen, revered as guardians of the deep. Some Echo Sages claim to communicate with them.
- Cascade Frogs: Amphibians whose croaking harmonizes with waterfall resonance; used by Aqua-Healers as diagnostic aids (their croaking changes pitch in the presence of water contamination).
- Silver Otters: Playful, intelligent mammals that Naiad children befriend; often seen accompanying young Sproutlings during swimming lessons.
Familiars & Magical Bond
A Naiad's Familiar is typically a River Serpent or Mist-Hawk with whom they have completed a Deep Bond—a prolonged merge during which both parties share water-memories. The bond grants:
- Shared sensory perception (the Naiad can see through the familiar's eyes and vice versa).
- Empathic communication across distances linked by water.
- Enhanced magical potency when working in concert—a bonded Naiad and River Serpent can manipulate currents far beyond either's individual ability.
