Pantheon & Divine Beings
| Deity / Entity | Domain | Attributes |
|---|---|---|
| Aquara | Primordial water goddess, creator of the First Rain. | Depicted as a vast, luminous figure composed entirely of flowing water; her tears became the world's springs. |
| The Seven Wellmothers | Ancestral spirits, patrons of the seven primal springs. | Revered as semi-divine founders; each is invoked in ceremonies related to their domain (navigation, healing, defense, etc.). |
| The Deep Current | Elemental force, the underlying will of all water. | Not personified—understood as an impersonal, omnipresent force that connects all waterways and carries the sum of all water-memories. |
| Stagnos | Anti-deity, embodiment of stagnation and corruption. | A cautionary figure in Naiad mythology; Stagnos represents entropy, decay, and the death of flow. Invoking the name is considered ill-omened. |
Cosmology
The Naiads believe the world is a vast Water Cycle—creation, flow, evaporation, condensation, and return. Life, death, and rebirth mirror this cycle. The soul of a Naiad, upon the Final Flow, joins the Deep Current, contributing its memories to the eternal collective. In time, fragments of these memories resurface in new Sproutlings, ensuring continuity without exact replication.
Sacred Texts & Prophecies
- The Chronicle of the Deep: The foundational scripture, continually expanded, containing creation myths, historical records, laws, and philosophical teachings.
- The Prophecy of the Dry Age: A foreboding prediction that a time will come when the world's waters will recede, forcing the Naiads to seek the Hidden Aquifer—a mythical, inexhaustible water source deep beneath the continental plate. The prophecy drives much of the Naiads' exploration and conservation efforts.
- Songs of the Wellmothers: Seven sacred hymns, each attributed to a Wellmother, sung only during the most solemn ceremonies. They are believed to resonate with the original frequencies of the primal springs.
Religious Practice
- Daily Devotion: The Dawn Immersion and Current Blessing serve as daily acts of reverence toward Aquara and the Deep Current.
- Priestly Class: Echo Sages fulfill both scholarly and religious roles—they are historians, judges, and spiritual leaders.
- Pilgrimages: Visits to the seven primal springs are considered essential spiritual journeys; most Naiads aim to complete the circuit at least once in their lifetime.
