Geography

The Aetherium exists at the apex of the Aetheric Veil, a zone where aetheric energy bleeds into physical space in concentrations high enough to sustain permanent structures made of solidified aether. The citadel has no fixed walls in the conventional sense; its boundaries shift slightly as the Veil breathes, and Aether-Weavers must recalibrate the outer ward-anchors weekly. Below the citadel, the Veil thickens into what is called the Resonance Floor, a region of such dense aetheric concentration that physical objects move through it like objects through water.

Climate

The Aetherium's climate is unlike any other location in the Deep Earth: temperature, pressure, and even time seem to behave with slight inconsistency within the Veil, a phenomenon Aether-Weavers attribute to the proximity of the raw aetheric plane where physical laws apply differently. The aurora-light is constant and sourceless, emanating from the solidified aether itself. Void-Rifts formed during the Aetheric Schism twelve hundred years before the present created permanent cold-spots at their containment sites within and around the citadel.

History

Luminara founded the Aetherium by convincing the raw aetheric plane to crystallize a portion of itself into permanent physical form, a process that took three hundred years of continuous elemental negotiation and left her permanently altered, more aetheric than physical in nature. The Aetheric Schism approximately twelve hundred years before the present was the most traumatic event in the citadel's history: a failed experimental Void-Weaving tore open seventeen Void-Rifts throughout the Aetherium's lower districts, killing or transforming an entire generation of Aether-Weavers and creating the Rift-Crawler threat. The Void-Weave Observatory was established in the aftermath to prevent further uncontrolled Void events.

Legend & Lore

Aether-Weavers who have meditated longest in the Aurora Hall describe seeing Luminara herself within the light, not as a ghost or memory but as a continuous presence woven into the citadel's crystallized aether. They say she is still working, still negotiating with the aetheric plane, still extending and reinforcing the Aetherium's foundations in ways that register as unexplained structural improvements discovered by maintenance teams who are certain no one authorized the work. Whether this is mystical reality or the collective projection of a civilization that refuses to let its founder go is a debate the Aether-Weavers decline to resolve.

Life & Culture

Life in the Aetherium is suffused with a sense of existing at the edge of something vast and only partially understood. Aether-Weavers spend their days conducting experiments, monitoring Void-Rift containment, transcribing aetheric resonance records, and teaching the next generation of practitioners in the Aurora Hall's teaching galleries. The Star-Thread Library is open to qualified scholars from all five kingdoms, and a small permanent population of Earth, Fire, Water, and Air elemental researchers maintains a district near the citadel's outer wards. Resonance Credits flow heavily into the Aetherium's economy in exchange for Ley-Crystal Batteries and other aetheric goods manufactured uniquely here. Aether-Sprites fill the role of postal service, message carrier, and social connector throughout the citadel.
