Geography

The White Vale occupies a natural basin between two low ridgelines that protect it from the worst of the Frostbound Wastes' blizzard winds, giving it unusually undisturbed snow conditions. The basin is roughly a day's travel across at its widest and is home to significant populations of Snow Bears, Frost Wolves, and the rarest herds of snowmane elk — attracted precisely because the near-absence of human activity makes it the safest hunting ground for prey species as well.

Climate

Within its sheltering ridges the White Vale experiences calmer conditions than the open wastes, with lighter winds and snowfall that layers in deep, even drifts. Experienced hunters note that the Vale often holds a peculiar stillness even during storms that rage beyond its ridges — a quality they attribute to Skadi's active influence.

Points of Interest

  • 📍 The Entry Stone, a single unmarked rock at the Vale's northern entrance where hunters undergo the ritual of permission before entering
  • 📍 The Deepfield, the central zone of the Vale where the snow is deepest and where the most significant prey is found
  • 📍 A seasonal spirit-offering cairn reconstructed each winter by the Windrunner Clan at the southern edge
  • 📍 The Ridgeline Watch, high points used by hunters awaiting permission to survey the Vale's terrain before entering

History

The White Vale has been designated sacred ground for as long as Frostborn tradition extends. The practice of restricting entry to honored hunters was formalized during the Council of Chiefs that followed the Age of Fracture, when overhunting of accessible grounds nearly depleted several prey species. The restriction of the Vale has since allowed it to serve as a population refuge for key animals, ensuring the Frostbound Wastes retain viable prey even through hard winters.

Legend & Lore

Hunters who are granted entry to the White Vale and conduct themselves with proper reverence sometimes report seeing the impression of enormous tracks in the snow — too large for any known creature, with a stride length that suggests something the size of a Glacial Bear but lighter-footed than any bear could be. The Frostborn call these Skadi's own tracks and consider seeing them an omen of a successful and honorable hunt. A hunter who disturbs or attempts to follow these tracks is said to return empty-handed for a full season afterward.

Life & Culture

Entry to the White Vale requires explicit permission from the clan's shaman, granted only after the hunter has demonstrated sufficient experience and made the ritual offering to Skadi at the Entry Stone. Hunters enter alone or in pairs, never in full war-bands, and are expected to take only what they can carry out without assistance. Anything killed in the Vale must be used completely — waste is considered a personal affront to Skadi and typically results in the revocation of entry rights.
