Vintergate cuts through the Shattered Ridges at one of the few points where the peaks are low enough to cross, following a natural fault in the underlying geology. The pass is roughly a mile in length and barely wide enough in its narrowest section for two heavily loaded sleds to pass abreast. Trail-runes carved by generations of Waywalkers mark safe footing along the entire route.

Even when the surrounding wastes are relatively clear, Vintergate can be subject to sudden localized blizzards caused by wind compression through its narrow walls. The pass is considered passable from late spring through early autumn; a traditional saying holds that any caravan caught in Vintergate when the first seasonal freeze comes has misjudged their season.

The Whitepeak-Windrunner compact governing Vintergate was originally forged to end a generation-long dispute over toll rights, mediated by an early Council of Chiefs session. The agreement established that neither clan could charge tolls to other Frostborn, could not deny passage to trade caravans from allied peoples, and must both contribute warriors to its defense during the open season. The compact has been honored without interruption for over two centuries, making it one of the longest-standing inter-clan agreements in Frostborn history.

Frostborn storytellers speak of the Battle of the Narrows, a night centuries ago when a Stormwatch war-band of seven held Vintergate against a force of ice trolls emerging from the Shattered Ridges during the Age of Fracture. The seven are named in clan oral tradition, and their deeds are sung at the annual Vintergate Crossing ceremony that officially reopens the pass each spring — a celebration attended by both the Whitepeak and Windrunner Clans together.

During the open season, Vintergate sees constant traffic: trade caravans heading for Rimehaven or Frosthold, hunters returning from the eastern wastes, Waywalker guides escorting external visitors, and the warrior rotations of both guardian clans changing shifts. The atmosphere in the pass is purposeful and businesslike — travelers move quickly, guided by deep respect for the weather's capricious nature and awareness that time in Vintergate should be minimized. The Compact Stone at the western entrance serves as an informal message board where travelers leave carved snow-markers with news and weather reports for those following behind them.
