History
The Arcane Citadel was raised in an early age of Mystaran civilization as both a center of magical learning and a symbol of unified power. It has served as the nexus of inter-regional coordination and the seat of the Guardian Role that THE MYSTARANS assume toward neighboring peoples. Its foundations are said to predate even the oldest written Mystaran records.
Legend & Lore
It is whispered among Mystaran scholars that the Arcane Citadel was not built by mortal hands alone, that on the eve of its foundation, an entity of immeasurable age walked the chosen ground and pressed its will into the bedrock, binding the ley-lines themselves into the structure's bones. Some records, too fragile and too few to be authoritative, suggest the Citadel's deepest foundations predate the Mystarans entirely, as though the civilization rose not to build the Citadel, but to tend to something already waiting beneath the earth. The topmost spire is said to flicker with a cold, violet light on nights when two or more ley-lines surge simultaneously, an event the Mystarans call the Accord's Breath, believed to be the Citadel's own acknowledgment of its purpose. Those who have climbed to the spire's apex on such a night and survived claim the air there tastes of memory, not wind.
Life & Culture
Daily life within the Arcane Citadel is governed by the rhythm of ley-tides, the waxing and waning of magical current through its walls, which dictate when enchantments are renewed, when councils convene, and when the great coordination chambers are opened to receive reports from outlying Mystaran territories. Magisters and junior adepts move through its tiered halls in strict hierarchical procession, each corridor assigned to a discipline of magical administration so that the flow of people mirrors the flow of power itself. The Guardian Role that the Mystarans assume toward neighboring peoples is administered here in the Chamber of Binding Accord, where delegation scrolls are drafted, sealed with living wax, and dispatched by trained courier-mages at dawn. Even meals are communal and deliberate, taken in the Hall of Measured Sustenance, where conversation on personal matters is customarily forbidden in favor of discourse on arcane theory and civic duty.
