The Lanes follow the courses of Landorya's major rivers for the majority of their length, widening at key junctions into Naiad-maintained canal basins and floating bridge waypoints. Where rivers are interrupted by difficult terrain, specially prepared overland stretches allow River-Wind barges to glide on a thin cushion of wind-magic, marked by carved stone waymarkers etched with Wind-Binding Runes.

The climate along the Lanes varies enormously given their continental span, from the warm, humid lowland river valleys to cooler upland stretches. The Aqua-Aerodynamics technology used by River-Wind barges is calibrated for a wide range of wind and water conditions, making the Lanes passable in most seasons.

The River-Wind Lanes were formalized as part of the Treaty of the Twin Currents with the Eldorian Republic, which granted mutual access to riverine trade routes in exchange for Eldorian wind-magic expertise, expertise that The Naiads subsequently incorporated into their Aqua-Aerodynamics school. Wave Envoys are a breed apart, road-hardened diplomats who eat, sleep, and negotiate aboard their gliding barges, learning to read the hum of the Ripple Net nodes the way farmers read weather. At the floating bridge waypoints, small communities of provisioners, rune-scribes, and off-duty Envoys have grown up around the Lanes, trading gossip about distant courts alongside smoked river-fish and fresh wind-crystals.
