CORATH THE WYRM-HERALD

Order of the Starlight

Sole Practitioner of the Aether-Wyrm Communion Protocol

CORATH THE WYRM-HERALD serves as Sole Practitioner of the Aether-Wyrm Communion Protocol within Order of the Starlight. CORATH THE WYRM-HERALD is identified as Aetherian. Primary residence: The Veil Nexus, the Astral Plateau. Known affiliation: Ministry of Planar Confluence. Commonly described traits include Traits: Profoundly unhurried in a way that is not passivity — he has been present for enough Order history to evaluate any current crisis against a very long sequence and finds most urgencies to be correctly categorized as sub-urgent; the exceptions to this, when they occur, are distinguished by his becoming immediately and completely still, Mannerisms: He does not initiate conversation; he responds to it. He asks no questions unless the answer is something he genuinely cannot determine himself — which occurs rarely and, when it does, has in every documented case indicated that the question is of significant importance, and Voice: Deep and slow and harmonic in a way that combines the natural Aetherian resonance with something larger — speaking with him is an experience that people describe as feeling slightly like being assessed, which is accurate.

Aetherian Age: 358 Male

"The Wyrms are not old. They are the memory of what was old. There is a difference, and it matters more than almost anything else I know."

Appearance

Physical: At three hundred and fifty-eight, Corath is among the oldest living Aetherians, and the distinction is visible not in physical decline but in amplification — his sigil-markings cover every visible surface of his skin in a lattice so dense and intricate that it has ceased to look like a developmental feature and appears instead to be a second layer of tissue. His skin luminescence is deep gold, steady as starlight, with brief surges that Veil Nexus practitioners have learned to recognize as occurring when an Aether-Wyrm is nearby. His eyes are entirely silver, without iris demarcation, and glow slightly in low light.

Clothing: A simple, very old robe in layered Veil-Silk — the same garment or a sequence of nearly identical replacements, no one is entirely certain — bearing no Ministry insignia, no decorative elements, and no functional modifications. He does not carry an Aether-Staff. He has not needed one in over a century.

Distinguishing Marks: His voice produces Aether-Wyrm harmonics during communion — a resonance pattern at a frequency human ears can feel but not quite hear, which causes animals in the vicinity to go still and causes other Aetherian practitioners to feel briefly as though their own aetheric fields have been examined by something much larger than the room.

Relationships

  • Arch-Luminary Aelindra the Radiant - He advised three Arch-Luminaries before her and considers her the most capable of the four — a judgment he has never articulated to her directly because he believes this kind of assessment, made explicit, does more harm than good to the person receiving it
  • Berath of the Confluence - He was at the Veil Nexus during Berath's forty-fourth rift closure and perceived both the deviation from protocol and the presence on the other side of the rift; he has said nothing to Berath about either, waiting for Berath to reach the questions himself — an approach that Berath's seventeen-year timeline is testing his patience with
  • Voryn the Wyrm-Touched - The only other practitioner who has had any Wyrm contact at all, though Voryn's was involuntary and incomplete; Corath monitors Voryn's development with attention he does not show, waiting for the contact to clarify itself into something he can assess

Personality

  • Traits: Profoundly unhurried in a way that is not passivity — he has been present for enough Order history to evaluate any current crisis against a very long sequence and finds most urgencies to be correctly categorized as sub-urgent; the exceptions to this, when they occur, are distinguished by his becoming immediately and completely still

Backstory

Corath achieved his first Aether-Wyrm communion at age eighty-three, the youngest documented case in Order history and a circumstance that was not planned: he was alone at the Veil Nexus calibrating a ley-line convergence instrument when the Wyrm emerged from the deepest convergence and, by his later account, examined him for seven minutes before returning. He reported the encounter immediately and spent the next century developing, in collaboration with the Ministry of Planar Confluence, the Communion Protocol — a set of practices that allow deliberate contact with Aether-Wyrm presences without destabilizing the ley-line convergence in which they dwell. He has achieved documented Communion thirty-one times. No other practitioner has achieved it once.

Daily Life

Corath's daily life is organized around the Veil Nexus's rhythms rather than Luminara's social schedule. He maintains the convergence monitoring instruments in the early morning, a task he has refused to delegate for two centuries on the grounds that the instruments have been calibrated to his personal aetheric signature and recalibration would introduce error. Midday and afternoon are fluid: sometimes deep in the Nexus chambers in a meditative state that visitors cannot easily distinguish from Communion and that Corath does not always distinguish for them. He attends Conclave briefings quarterly and says less than anyone in the room. The Arch-Luminary weights his contributions accordingly.

Secret

In the thirty-first Communion, the Aether-Wyrm did not examine him. It warned him. The warning was specific, urgent by Wyrm standards — which meant it was delivered as something that would occur within a century — and concerned the ley-line convergence itself. The Wyrm indicated that the convergence is not a natural formation but a constructed one, built by something that predates the Order, and that its structural integrity is dependent on a condition that is no longer being maintained. Corath has been, for the past forty years, attempting to identify what the condition is. He has not found it.

Story Hooks

  • 1 Corath approaches outsiders with an unprecedented request: he needs someone to carry a message into the deep Nexus chambers and remain present during a Communion attempt — not to observe, but to anchor him, because for the first time in three centuries he is uncertain whether a Communion he is preparing will be safe to conduct alone
  • 2 Aether-Wyrm harmonics begin appearing spontaneously across the Astral Plateau in locations without ley-line convergence — meaning either the Wyrms are moving for the first time in recorded history or something is producing Wyrm-signature aetheric output, and Corath needs outsiders to investigate the remote locations while he maintains the Nexus

Narrative Value

Corath is the Order's bridge to its deepest and oldest magical infrastructure, the only character with direct access to the Aether-Wyrms' knowledge, and the carrier of a warning about the ley-line convergence's structural condition that, if true, represents an existential threat to the Order's physical foundation; he functions as a sage whose knowledge is real, verifiable, and potentially catastrophic.
