ELARITH OF THE VEIL WALLS

Order of the Starlight

Third-Grade Star-Sentinel, Eastern Veil Wall Station

ELARITH OF THE VEIL WALLS serves as Third-Grade Star-Sentinel, Eastern Veil Wall Station within Order of the Starlight. ELARITH OF THE VEIL WALLS is identified as Aetherian. Primary residence: Eastern Veil Wall Station, the Astral Plateau. Known affiliation: Ministry of the Veil. Commonly described traits include Traits: Direct and unimpressed by institutional hierarchy in a way that is not disrespectful — she recognizes authority and follows orders competently; she simply does not perform deference, which supervisors who expected the performance find unsettling and supervisors who did not find a relief, Mannerisms: Scans the perimeter of any room she enters as a reflex before settling, a fieldwork habit that reads as restlessness to people who do not know her; she gives status reports at twice the standard compression rate, having found that the standard format contains approximately fifty percent filler, and Voice: Clipped and precise, with the economy of speech that comes from calling observations across distances in Aether-Storm conditions; she modulates it in the direction of patience when explaining something to someone who has not worked field positions, which is most people in Luminara.

Aetherian Age: 61 Female

Appearance

Physical: Built for endurance rather than elegance — Elarith has the denser muscle mass and lower center of gravity of a practitioner whose training includes sustained physical patrol across high-altitude terrain. Her skin luminescence is a clear, steady blue, the color specifically cultivated in Star-Sentinel training as visible at distance in low-visibility conditions without producing the kind of glow that compromises night-perception. Her sigil-markings are disciplined, compact, and placed on the body to minimize interference with standard protective warding patterns.

Clothing: Standard Star-Sentinel field kit: layered Veil-Silk over a lightweight underlayer, ward-stitching at shoulders and forearms, weathered at the knees and elbows from honest use. She carries the standard-issue Sentinel staff for aetheric warding projection — the third one in seven years, having broken two in incidents she describes as structural testing and her supervisors describe differently.

Distinguishing Marks: A small, precise scar along her left jaw from an incident she declines to detail that the Sentinel corps record describes as 'probationary incident, resolved, commendation attached' — the commendation and the scar appearing in the same personnel record is considered characteristic of Elarith's service to date.

Relationships

  • Theron the Veil Commander - Her commanding officer and the practitioner who, at her posting, told her that the Eastern Station was a testing ground she would either thrive in or request transfer from within six months; she thrived and he has maintained a professional relationship that includes exactly the level of oversight her record warrants and no more
  • Karath Ironveil - A veteran Sentinel whose decades of field experience she has consulted repeatedly; he respects the quality of her anomaly documentation and has told her, once, that she has better instincts than her rank suggests — a statement she considers the most useful professional feedback she has received
  • Berath of the Confluence - She filed an anomaly report that crossed into Planar Confluence jurisdiction and Berath visited the Station to assess it; in the two hours he spent at the Eastern face, she noticed that he recognized the anomaly pattern before she named it — a recognition she filed in her private log alongside a note that he did not explain how

Personality

  • Traits: Direct and unimpressed by institutional hierarchy in a way that is not disrespectful — she recognizes authority and follows orders competently; she simply does not perform deference, which supervisors who expected the performance find unsettling and supervisors who did not find a relief
  • Mannerisms: Scans the perimeter of any room she enters as a reflex before settling, a fieldwork habit that reads as restlessness to people who do not know her; she gives status reports at twice the standard compression rate, having found that the standard format contains approximately fifty percent filler
  • Voice: Clipped and precise, with the economy of speech that comes from calling observations across distances in Aether-Storm conditions; she modulates it in the direction of patience when explaining something to someone who has not worked field positions, which is most people in Luminara

Backstory

Elarith entered Star-Sentinel training at the standard age of twenty-two after a resonance-matching assessment that pointed unambiguously toward defensive ward-work. She completed training ranked second in her cohort and was posted to the Eastern Veil Wall Station — a position considered less prestigious than the central Luminara installations and chosen for her specifically because her supervising trainer believed she would benefit from isolation. This turned out to be a more complicated prediction than the trainer intended: Elarith did not become easier to manage in isolation, but she became formidably good at managing the Wall. In seven years she has reported eleven anomalies that the central installation's instruments did not catch, six of which, on investigation, proved to require active response.

Daily Life

Elarith maintains rotating four-hour watch shifts at the Eastern Station with a crew of two junior Sentinels she has trained in her own reporting protocols rather than the Ministry's standard format — a deviation she logged as a field-condition adaptation and that the Ministry has not yet reviewed. Patrol rotations cover the eastern face of the Astral Plateau's warding perimeter; she runs the patrol herself at least twice per shift rather than delegating entirely. In the time between active watches she maintains the Station's ward-crystals, files precision-compressed incident reports, and, in the past several months, keeps a private log of a specific anomaly pattern she has observed eleven times and which has no corresponding entry in the Ministry's catalogue.

Secret

The eleven instances of the anomaly she has documented — a specific aetheric pressure pattern on the exterior of the Veil Wall that her instruments measure as emanating from outside the Plateau's boundary, not within — are occurring at increasing frequency. The pattern is not random: it appears specifically at the Eastern face, specifically during the three-hour window around midnight, and specifically when the constellation Aetheris Major is at zenith. She has not reported this to the Ministry because her last anomaly report that included an astronomical correlation was returned with a note that she was operating outside her methodological scope. She has, however, sent a copy to Vorthis Stormtouched without explanation.

Story Hooks

  • 1 Elarith contacts outsiders through unofficial channels — not her chain of command — to ask them to approach the eastern face of the Astral Plateau from outside, at midnight under Aetheris Major, and describe what they observe from that angle
  • 2 The anomaly pattern produces, for the first time, a readable aetheric signal rather than pressure — and the signal is in Aethertongue, predating any version of the language the Archive contains, and addressed to a recipient whose name Elarith does not recognize but Nythara Duskveil does

Narrative Value

Elarith is the character whose ground-level field observation independently confirms the converging threat-pattern visible in Vorthis's Storm data, Berath's planar-boundary research, and Corath's Wyrm warning; she functions as the boots-on-the-ground anchor for the Order's largest narrative arc and as a character who demonstrates that the institutional hierarchy's blind spots have field consequences.
