KARATH IRONVEIL
Order of the StarlightVeil-Warden Captain, Ministry of the Veil
KARATH IRONVEIL serves as Veil-Warden Captain, Ministry of the Veil within Order of the Starlight. KARATH IRONVEIL is identified as Aetherian. Primary residence: The Veil Walls garrison, the Astral Plateau. Known affiliation: Ministry of the Veil. Commonly described traits include Traits: Economical with words and movement; he has the quality of someone who calculated the cost of excess long ago and decided against it; his care for his Wardens expresses itself in preparation, not sentiment, and they trust him for the same reason, Mannerisms: Positions himself in any room so that his back is to a wall, an ingrained tactical habit he maintains even in the Forum of Luminaries; when giving orders he uses fewer words than the order requires, relying on his Wardens' knowledge of context to complete the meaning, and Voice: Low and controlled, with an Aetherian harmonic resonance that is flattened slightly — he learned to suppress it deliberately during covert operations because the overtone is identifiable to trained listeners.
"The incursion I am preparing for has not happened yet. That is not reassurance. That is the definition of preparing."

Appearance
Physical: Broader and more muscular than the Aetherian norm, built by two centuries of aetheric combat conditioning. His skin's luminescence is a deep, slow-pulsing amber that practitioners in the Ministry say resembles a ward-crystal at operational load. His eyes are dark silver, nearly charcoal, and carry the evaluative stillness of someone who learned very early that reading a situation is survival. The sigil-markings covering both arms extend across his collarbone and up his neck, dense with warding notation.
Clothing: Ministry of the Veil duty robes in deep navy reinforced with woven aetheric thread, providing a baseline protective ward without any visible device; he wears two Aether-Staves crossed at his back despite the fact that he almost never draws them, preferring to work with projected aetheric constructs.
Distinguishing Marks: A disrupted section of sigil-markings across his right shoulder blade — scar tissue from an aetheric strike during the last draconic incursion that burned a patch of marks out entirely, leaving smooth, non-luminescent skin the size of a palm.
Relationships
- Arch-Luminary Aelindra - She trusts his tactical read of the Veil Walls' operational status without question; he finds her political judgments sound and does not tell her this because he considers the information more useful to him if she does not know how much weight he gives it
- Zareya the Bridgewalker - They trained together and have maintained correspondence across decades; she is one of three people alive he will speak to without calculating every sentence first
- Theron Veil-Commander - His most senior subordinate and most reliable officer; Karath has been quietly preparing the documentation for Theron's elevation to Co-Captain for eight years and has not yet submitted it because he is not certain the Ministry would survive losing Theron from his current operational role

Backstory
Karath entered the Veil-Wardens directly from his Trial of the Veil at the age of ninety-eight, having chosen the Ministry of the Veil in explicit preference to the more prestigious paths open to him. He served in three draconic incursion responses over the following century, advancing through the Warden structure by a combination of tactical success and the grim attrition of his predecessors. He was appointed Captain forty-one years ago following the incursion in which his previous commanding officer was killed and Karath held the Veil Walls' eastern sector against a coordinated assault for eleven hours until reinforcement arrived. He does not speak about the incursion. The disrupted sigil scar on his shoulder blade is from that same night. Since his appointment, there have been no further incursions — a fact he regards not as peace but as an extended interval between problems.
Daily Life
Karath's days are organized around the Veil Walls' operational cycle: morning inspection of the ward-crystal network, midday tactical briefings with his senior Wardens, afternoon training in aetheric combat projection for the newer Veil-Wardens. He reviews all Star-Emissary intelligence reports routed through the Ministry of the Veil before they reach the Conclave — a standing permission he negotiated with Aelindra based on his argument that tactical intelligence loses operational value when filtered through administrative delay. He attends Conclave sessions only when invited, which is less often than his position technically warrants.
Secret
Karath has identified a systematic weakness in the Veil Walls' eastern sector that has existed since the last incursion damaged and subsequently repaired ward-crystals in that zone. The repair was technically correct but produced a resonance gap in the overlapping field coverage, approximately twelve paces wide, that a sufficiently precise aetheric strike could exploit. He has submitted a maintenance requisition for the past six years. The requisition remains in the Ministry of Aetheric Sciences queue. He has not escalated it to Aelindra because he believes the Ministry's budget allocation process would require him to reveal the vulnerability's exact nature in documentation that would be more widely distributed than the gap itself.
Story Hooks
- 1 Karath summons outsiders who recently passed through the Aether-Gate network and requests a private meeting; he has received intelligence that something used the gate from the Talamhari side without a diplomatic seal and left a trace he does not recognize
- 2 The eastern sector resonance gap is probed during what is logged as an Aether-Storm — but Karath's analysis suggests the pattern was too precise and directional to be weather, and he needs someone with no institutional affiliation to investigate without alarming the Wardens
Narrative Value
Karath is the Order's practical defense anchor — the figure who holds the gap between the Conclave's theoretical authority and the actual work of keeping Luminara safe, with a classified structural weakness that represents a genuine tactical crisis if the wrong parties discover it before the right parties fix it.
