Appearance

Physical: Velith is present in body and inconsistently present in attention — she moves through space with physical grace but sometimes stops mid-step as though the rest of the path has not been confirmed. Her skin luminescence is notably two-layered: a solid, normal silver glow overlaid by a second, slower pulse in a blue-violet frequency that practitioners recognize as associated with the psychic frontier beyond normal dream-walking depth. Her eyes are a deep violet that occasionally shift to pure white when she is processing something not visible to others in the room.

Clothing: Recovery-wing patient's robes in pale grey, worn with the small practical additions of someone who has been in one place long enough to personalize it: a Thought-Fox's fur resting across her shoulders as a familiar-anchor, a set of dream-notation tablets on a cord at her wrist, and, always, bare feet — she has explained that footwear interferes with her ability to confirm that she is on the physical plane.

Distinguishing Marks: The sigil-markings on her scalp have developed a second layer since her partial return — new markings growing through and over the existing ones in a pattern that Imara's healers photograph monthly and that has not stopped developing.

Relationships

  • Star-Sage Orinthos the Dreamer - Her teacher and the practitioner who authorized the deep Vigil; she does not blame him for the consequences and he does not interpret her lack of blame as absolution — a dynamic between them that has never become simpler and that both consider the correct response to what happened
  • Imara the Woven-Whole - Her primary healer and the practitioner most consistently present in her recovery; Velith trusts Imara's clinical judgment completely and extends this trust to Imara's off-record treatment methods, about which she knows more than Imara has told her because she occasionally perceives things about people's intentions before she perceives their words
  • Rendor the Apprentice Dreamer - A young dream-walking student who visits the Recovery Wing to speak with her about deep frontier theory; she answers his questions with complete seriousness and has told him, once, that the place she reached should not be reached again yet — a characterization that has structured his research practice without him fully understanding why

Personality

  • Traits: Verbally precise about some things and genuinely uncertain about others in a way that does not follow standard practitioner categorization; she will describe the psychic landscape she explored with the vocabulary of a cartographer and express uncertainty about whether she ate breakfast
  • Mannerisms: She periodically touches the physical objects nearest to her — tables, walls, her own arm — in a specific sequence that she describes as a grounding protocol and that Orinthos, when asked, confirmed is clinically appropriate for her situation
  • Voice: Clear and technically precise when describing the territory she explored; intermittently very quiet when discussing her return, as though volume is itself a variable she is still calibrating

Backstory

Velith was one of Orinthos the Dreamer's most capable students and the practitioner he authorized for the deepest unsupported Dream-Vigil he had ever cleared. She descended into the psychic frontier at age one hundred and seventy-eight to investigate an anomalous region Orinthos had identified — a space in the dream landscape where the boundary between the psychic and the aetheric seemed to be thin in the wrong direction. She was gone for six days by external time. On return, she carried fourteen tablets of notation and a set of observations that Orinthos has classified as the most significant dream-walking data collected in the Order's history. She has also not been able to locate her own position in linear time with full reliability since the return, which makes her daily life specific and her testimony simultaneously invaluable and complex.

Daily Life

Velith's days are structured by the Recovery Wing's protocols, which she follows without resistance because she has found the structure useful for maintaining her temporal orientation. Morning exercises establish her physical-plane anchor. Late morning she works with Imara's healers on the persistent orientation issues. Afternoons she transcribes and annotates the fourteen tablets of notation from her deep exploration, work that Orinthos supervises weekly and that is progressing toward a complete account of territory that, as far as either of them can determine, no practitioner has reached before or since. Evenings are for the Thought-Fox and for confirmed sleep — shallow, watched, with a monitoring crystal Imara calibrated specifically for her.

Secret

The fourteen tablets of notation are not complete. Velith encoded the most significant finding she brought back from the deep frontier in a notation system she developed inside the dream-state and has not translated into Aethertongue — not because she cannot, but because the finding, when she examines it from the recovered state, is not something she is certain should be in the archive while Orinthos is still pushing toward that territory. She is waiting for clarity about what to do with it that has not yet come.

Story Hooks

  • 1 Velith asks outsiders for a specific practical favor: she perceived, in the deep frontier, a physical object in a specific real-world location that she could not retrieve herself; the object is relevant to stabilizing the frontier region she explored, and she needs someone to obtain it before Orinthos's next deep Vigil attempt
  • 2 She approaches outsiders with a single question: she perceived their presence in the deep frontier before meeting them in waking life and needs to know whether they have ever experienced the psychic landscape in any form — the answer affects how she interprets the most significant finding on the fourteen tablets

Narrative Value

Velith is the Order's most direct witness to the territory where the psychic frontier meets the aetheric boundary and the character most likely to carry intelligence that is literally impossible for any other NPC to possess; her temporal disorientation makes her testimony simultaneously the most valuable and the most difficult to interpret in the Order.
