Fauna, Companions & Familiars
15.1 Sacred and Wild Creatures
| Creature | Description |
|---|---|
| Silver Stags | Majestic, intelligent creatures attuned to the magical energies of the land. They serve as guides through the mists and are considered sacred. Harming a Silver Stag is one of the gravest offenses in Mystaran law. |
| Mist-Wraiths | Semi-corporeal entities that drift through the fog, serving as sentinels and messengers. They are not undead but manifestations of concentrated magical energy, loyal to the Conclave. |
| Whisperwood Guardians | Ancient, semi-sentient trees that protect the groves of Mystara. They communicate through rustling leaves and shifting branches, sharing fragments of the forest's accumulated wisdom with those who listen. |
| Phoenixes | Rare and magnificent fire-birds that nest in the volcanic regions of Mystara. Their periodic death and rebirth is studied by Mystaran scholars as a model of magical transformation and renewal. |
| Unicorns | Solitary, powerful creatures of pure magical energy. They are rarely seen but their presence is considered a sign of strong magical balance in the area. |
| Sentient Plants | Various species of magically aware vegetation populate the groves of Mystara, capable of basic communication and occasionally serving as repositories of ancient knowledge. |
15.2 Familiars and Bonded Companions
Many Mystarans bond with magical familiars
creatures enhanced by their master's magical power. These familiars range from luminous owls and spectral cats to crystalline serpents and dream-butterflies. The familiar bond deepens a mage's connection to the arcane.
| Familiar Type | Specialization |
|---|---|
| Luminous Owls | Favored by diviners and seers. Their eyes can perceive across the spectrum of magical frequencies, and they serve as early warning systems for magical disturbances. |
| Spectral Cats | Popular among illusionists and enchanters. They can become invisible at will and possess an innate ability to detect hidden enchantments. |
| Crystalline Serpents | Preferred by Mathemagicians and sigil-weavers. Their scales form naturally occurring mathematical patterns that their bonded mage can "read" for insights into arcane equations. |
| Dream-Butterflies | Bonded to Dream-Walkers. They can traverse the boundary between waking and sleeping, carrying messages and impressions across the dream-border. |
| Mistcats | General-purpose familiars valued for their ability to phase through solid matter and their keen senses. Particularly popular among younger mages. |
15.3 Creature Conservation
The Mystarans maintain rigorous protections for all magical fauna within their borders. The Warden-Speakers
a small, dedicated group of mages who have developed the ability to communicate with magical creatures
serve as advocates for the non-humanoid inhabitants of Mystara. The Warden-Speakers report directly to the Conclave on matters of animal welfare and ecological balance, and their counsel carries significant weight in decisions about land use, magical experimentation, and visitor access.
